He stated that there should be some group in this city to take <br />charge of problems arising out of this ,war for the duration of the war and <br />for some years after. He stated that the Red Cross had contributed many <br />services to civilian defense and, in return,, had received valuable services <br />from them. <br />Councilman Britschgi suggested that a permanent war services organization <br />should be set. up under a defi*: te_ head. <br />Mr. S. E. Kyle stated that he didn't see much of an issue. Civilian defense <br />activities had already been relaxed and shouldn!t be relaxed.much more. <br />Mr..Frank DePatta, head of the Salvage Committee, stated that whenever he <br />gets an appeal from the:WPB e l he has to do is get in touch with civilian <br />defense or city employees and has always had the fullest cooperation, as can <br />be seen from results obtained in salvage drives. <br />Mr. Bert Werder, Fire Coordinator of San Mateo County, commented on the fact <br />that the war is not yet over and that the,fire hazard has increased. The <br />civilian defense is needed to stimulate .drives, etc. He stated that we don't <br />know what faces us and, while we might slacken up a little, he does -not be- <br />lieve we should quit. <br />Mr. Carbine stated he thought one of the main things of civilian defense was <br />that one became acquainted with one's neighbor... He commented on the help <br />civilian defense gave in Daly City disaster:k and said he thought Councilman <br />Britschgils idea of city employees serving on fire and police forces a good <br />one as a great many of the auxiliary fire and policemen were employed in <br />San Francisco, <br />Mr. Louis Dematteis, as a member of the War Council, stated that the obligation <br />of civilian defense rested with the City Council. He said that the War <br />Council has given a great deal of time to endeavor to coordinate and meet problems <br />of.civilian defense as they develop. The first emphasis was placed on pro- <br />tective services .but now the council has.changed its policies and is endeavor- <br />ing to shift to war services. He stated that the War Council has always <br />sought advice from everyone and from the City Council. As chairman of the <br />Public Relations Committee, he has endeavored to create a good feeling and <br />does not want to see that feeling destroyed.. The War Council would enjoy <br />receiving suggestion from the City Council at any time, as it is a mutual <br />problem. He stated that as long as the City Council feels the War Council <br />should continue he will be glad to serve.. <br />Councilman Anderson moved that the War Council continue as at present and all <br />members be commenddd for work performed, seconded by Councilman Britschgi. <br />Under the question it was decided -that a letter be addressed to the War <br />Council conveying the above thoughts. Motion carried unanimously. <br />Mr: James Hedge, Chairman of the Citizens' War Memorial Committee, expressed his <br />thanks,for the honor conferred upon him in being appointed to the committee. <br />He reported that the committee is taking the job seriously.
