U <br />n <br />1 <br />0 <br />1 <br />stated that the building in its present condition is unsafe for meetings and <br />;said considerable work was necessary to render it.safe.. Councilman Armstrong <br />moved, seconded by Councilman Fletcher, that. the City Manager and Fire Chief be <br />instructed to make a study of the premises and report at the next meeting their <br />recommendations for alterations to make the building suitable for a'meeting <br />place for the Boy Scouts and present a rough estimate of the cost of the alter- <br />ations. Under the question, City Manager Mead stated he'had submitted the report <br />to Mr. Demmatteis and had. advised him that he would be .glad to hold a meeting wit <br />his group to .decide what.should be:done. Councilman Armstrong stated that under <br />his motion Mr. Dematteis and his'gmoup could be invited to sit in on the meeting. <br />Motion passed unanimously. <br />Councilman Britschgistated he, believed the fire escape at the Sequoia Hotel was <br />locked. Fire Chief Ryan -said he did not know if it were locked but that it was <br />not of much value. He also stated there, wereseveral buildings in town where <br />the fire escape facilities were poor., Councilman Britschgi asked if the Council <br />s4 couldn't do something to have these escapes improved. Mayor Granger.asked:if the <br />Council had any, control over, buildings, of, this type as, far as fire, -escapes-=were . <br />concerned.. City Attorney McCarthy believed the Council had authority where it <br />°w,involved the saving of ,lives. Councilman Fletcher moved, seconded by Councilman <br />!Britschgi that, City Manager Mead and City Attorney McCarthy lbe.instrwt ed fio <br />look .into t he matter and search c ertain ordinances to see if there is one.:ads- <br />quate to take care of this and, if so, to present it at the next meeting. Motion <br />passed unanimously. <br />Councilman Britschgi askad the City Attorney if he had heard anything in regard.to, <br />lighting i'n.tave,rns.. City Attorney McCarthy stated he had contacted.City,Attorn( <br />t .O'Toole of San Francisco but had not heard from: him and would againcontact' him. <br />Councilman Fletcher brought up the matter of-unsanitavy conditions existing at the <br />('Diner". He said he had heard there were rats, in evidence and general unsanitar, <br />conditions. He asked that the Health Department make an inspection..' Health <br />;Inspector Hodge reported that the Health.De.partment'had received a complaint in <br />regard to <br />the type of silverware being used there and all improper silverware ha( <br />been picked up. A. sanitary inspection had been made and the proprietor had been <br />.informed of corrections to be made. He stated„ he: would check back from. time to. <br />time. Mayor Granger asked 'if permit had not been issued on a tempora basis and <br />asked ,how long 'the °,Dine° was to stay there. Councilman Fletcher stated he had <br />-voted to' allow the permit and was ready to vote to revoke it at any time. Per - <br />was introduced showing that permit had been issued to E. H. Thorsen.in 1934, <br />with the provision that wiring and .plumbing be :done according to City regulation <br />-and subject, to revocation at any time. ; <br />Health Inspeator Hodge reported that two State men were making inspections <br />-of rats and that very few rats were found in Redwood City. Councilman Hilton <br />asked if the City had an y'facilities for taking care ,of rats. City Manager Mead <br />replied that the Health Department took care of the matter.
