Councilman Granger moved that the representatives in <br />Washington be contacted in regard to 5-2105 and icequest their support if, in <br />-their opinion, the bill is advantageoi}s, seconded by Councilman Anderson. <br />Motion carried with Councilman Armstrong voting in the negative. <br />Communication was received from Mrs. Zelda A. Cook requesting permission to operate <br />a boarding house at 706 Arguello Street to take care of five elderly ladies. <br />,The application had been approved by the County Welfare Department. There was <br />some discussion as to whether this property was in the second residential <br />district. After it was determined that it was, City Attorney McCarthy advised <br />the Council that while the zoning ordinance does not specifically provide for <br />boarding houses in the second residential area, it does provide for other <br />institutions and he believed it was within the province of the Council to <br />construe that boarding houses were permitted. Councilman Fletcher moved that <br />permit be granted subject to the approval of the Health Department, seconded <br />by Councilman Granger. Motion passed unanimously. <br />Mr. John McCarthy asked the Council if it would be possible to take the same action <br />in regard to boarding house at 35 Hudson Street as was being taken in regard <br />to Mrs. Rice's boarding house on Edgewood Road, He stated he knew there were <br />two or three families living in the house and he had no objection to it now but <br />felt it should not go on after the war. <br />Councilman Anderson moved that the matter of the boarding house at 35 Hudson <br />Street be referred to the City Manager and a report be made at the next meeting. <br />If there is a violation, it should be handled the same as Mrs. Rice's. <br />Councilman Granger seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. <br />Communication was received from W. L. Meussdorffer.requesting an extension of time <br />in order to remove his building from 1606 Main Street. He asked to be granted <br />until October 12, 1944, to remove the 'building. Councilman Granger moved, <br />seconded by Councilman Mellulty, that the extension be granted. Motion passed <br />unanimously. <br />Councilman Anderson reported on proposed industrial site purchase recommended by the <br />industrial committee. He reported that the committee had met to determine <br />what could be done by the city to acquire property which could be resold to <br />industries desiring to ,locate in Redwood City. He stated that it was discovered <br />that the council did not have the right to acquire property for speculative <br />purposes and it was decided to present the issue to the people. The committee, <br />after investigating many sites, finally determined that the site most available <br />and best fitted and suited for industrial sites would be the property which <br />was originally acquired for recreational facilities .at the end of Broadway <br />which was finally turned over to, -the National Motor Bearing and other industries <br />and finally dropped. The committee has secured an option to purchase the <br />remaining 107 acres in this tract at $1000 an acre. The option runs until <br />November 1521944. The committee felt it should be put on the ballot of the <br />coming election. Councilman Anderson stated this could be done and that the <br />committee so recommended.
