C <br />r <br />I <br />4" <br />Y <br />Complaint was made of the -.rough condition of the Broadway crossing of the tracks of. <br />the Southern Pacific Company and. the City Attorney was instructed., -to notify <br />the Southern Pacific Company that immediate improvement in the crossing must. - <br />be made and to urge the permanent construction of the crossing at 'the earliest <br />possible date. <br />A communication from Mrs..Harold Eisenberg, secretary of a committee .for Russian <br />Relief was read. After_a further explanation of the charitable purposes of <br />the public entertainment and opening of premisessfor the sale of Russian ar- <br />ticles and solicitation of funds therein refer-red•to, permission•to conduct <br />said sale and said public meeting at Sequoia High School Auditorium on Septem <br />ber 12.was unanimously granted and any license fee was waived on motion of <br />Councilman Anderson, seconded by Councilman Fletcher. The intention of said <br />committee to show a motion picture at said meeting was brought up by Mayor <br />Granger and Mr. Joseph F. Thompson, chairman of the committee, with the appro <br />val of Mrs. Stanley White Jr.; arepo.rt of said committee stated that the pic- <br />ture would show merely actual scenes of war participated in by Russian soldier; <br />and that the film was free from any propaganda or ideology and had been ap- <br />proved by the Federal licensing authority. It was agreed that the film would <br />be exhibited to the committee on censorship of motion picture films, of which <br />Councilman Britschgi,is chairman, on Saturday afternoon, September 12 at 4 P.M <br />A -communication from Mr. C:., H. Uhlenberg C.P.A., including 11 copies of his report <br />relative to His audit of the accounts and financial condition of this city for <br />the fiscal year ended June 30, 1942, was'read and on motion of Councilman <br />Fletcher, seconded by Councilman Anderson, Mr. Uhlenberg?s request that he be <br />appointed as special auditor for the current fiscal year was unanimously ap- <br />proved and his employment to prepare his annual audit for this year was ratifi <br />A communication'from Kenneth R. Hammaker, Executive Director of the California Stat <br />Council of'Defense in regards to sectional conference on mobilization of diti- <br />-zens for was at the Claremont Hotel at Berkeley on September 14, 1942, was <br />read. Mayor Granger commented on the advisibility of attendance at said con- <br />ference by such members of the City Council as may find it convenient to do so <br />A report from R. J. Clarke, Acting City Engineer, on the cost of reconstruction of <br />the sewer through the culvert of the creek crossing Oak Avenue between Cleve- <br />land and. Fay Streets Was' -read. After some discussion motion was made by Counc <br />man Anderson, seconded .by Councilman McNulty, and unanimously adopted ordering <br />the removal of said sewer and the reconstruction thereof under the concrete <br />base of said culvert at an estimated cost of $339.00. <br />Mrs. Clelia 3ertini being present was interrogated as to whether she is willing to <br />sign a waiver of liability on the part of Redwood City in consideration of the <br />reconstruction of the bulkhead in said creek along her property. She stated <br />that she was awaiting advice of her attorney. Mrs. Bertini stated that if the <br />bulkhead is reconstructed the City will be permitted to anchor "dead men" on <br />her property and under her house if deemed appropriate. <br />Mr. Formentini being present stated that in his opinion the City should extend the <br />
