He said he did not like the amount of skepti- cism among the members of the Council as to jts merit. Councilman Granger said that he vranted it unCterstood that his name was not to be used an endorsing the issue, as he said he was not endorsing it but merely voting to place it before the people. , Councilman Britschgi withdrew his motion and Councilman Fletcher withdrew his second. Counci>man Granger moved that the matter be laid on the table so as not to jeopardize the other bond issue, seconded by Councilman Armstrong. P.4otion passed unanimously. City Attorney McCarthy suggested that in view of the fact that the Chamber of Commerce had urged that this matter be placed on the ballot, the Council ad- journ -until September 25th, and have representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Morrish appear at the meeting. He.explaimed this would still give tiiae to plvice the issue on the ballot. It was decided, however, not to do this. City Manager Mead advised the Council that Louise Stiles had resigned from the Park and Recreation Commission'as a representative of the Business and Professional. Wo- men's Club and that this club had submitted the name of Laurette Ho&ce to replace her. He advised that he had appointed Mrs. Hod�e to Miss Stiles unexpiredterm ' i ending April 12, 1946. Councilman Granger moved that the City Attorney and Building Insnector be instructed to draft an amendment to the building ordinance to define the word "detached', seconded by Councilman Britschgi. Under the question, City Attorney McCarthy i asked if the intent was to tolerate detached buildings, to which Councilman Granger replied that it was not, the intenv was merely to define the word 11de- tached". Motion passed unanimously. Councilman McNulty reported that he had heard some comment that the watchman at the City Dump was salvaging the lumber vinich ::he Navy was dumping there and selling It. He said the Navy had told him that the lumber was placed there for anyone who wanted it. City Manager Mead said the agreement between the watchman_ and the city was that he could salvage khat was worthwhile and sell it. It was his opinion that once the Navy dualped the lumber there, they no lonr-er had any juris- diction over it, to which City Attorney McCarthy agreed.. j Councilman Fletcher reported the trees on Oakdale Avenue between Whipple Road and Ar- lington Road needed trimming. City IrlanaSer Mead agreed to have this done. , Councilman Arnstrong offered resolution requesting all "pars and stores offering liquor for sale to close on V -Day and providing for a copy of the resolution to be sent to each such establishment, seconded by Councilman Anderson. Councilman Britschgi was of the opinion this action would delay the cblb- • bration only a day. Councilman Fletcher expressed his opposition to the reso- lution. i On roll call, the motion passed with Councilman Britschgi and Councilman Fletcher voting in the negative. h!
