184
to Councilman Armstrong's question as to whether it would be legal to
handle the matter in this way, that the Statute provided that any cost of
engineering be put up with the city before the work is done, however, it is
immaterial whether the money is put up with the city or with the engineer who!
o®r
does the work. It was decided to allow the City Manager to decide who would
do the engineering.
Due to the fact that Joseph Cacamo was seriously injured in an accident and because;
he was to have been spokesman for the taxicab owners, Councilman Fletcher
moved, seconded by Councilman McNulty, that consideration of the proposed
taxicab ordinance be continued to the next meeting. Motion passed unanimously.
Councilman Britschgi advised that at the last meeting of the League of California
Cities he had suggested that Redwood City be host at the next meeting and that
it be held at Grace and Pierre's. He had reserved the evening of January 17
but so far nothing had been done in regard to entertainment. Councilman
Armstrong moved, seconded by Councilman Anderson, that Councilman Britschgi,
City Manager Blom and City Attorney McCarthy be appointed as a committee to
handle the entertainment. Motion passed unanimously.
City Clerk Dodge noted those signifying their intention of being present at
thin meeting. He advised that the secretary of the League had asked that
the council take notice of the fact that there was to be an election of a
director to take the place of William Soule, resigned City Manager of San
Mateo.
Mayor Hilton advised that Recreation Director Morton had asked him to advise the
Council of a Recreation Convention, January 9th and 10th and that a dinner
meeting was to be held January 9th. He asked as many of the councilmen as
possible to be present.
The Planning Commission recommendations were next considered.
1. Recommending rezoning of Arch Street between James and Lexington Avenues
from business to second residential district zone. Councilman Armstrong
offered introduction of ordinance, seconded by Councilman Fletcher, rezoning
Arch Street between James and Lexington Avenues from business to second `
residential district. Motion passed unanimously.
2. Recommending against the application of James Craig to change setback
lines on Stanley Street. City Attorney McCarthy advised that there several
protestants against changing the setback. The Planning Commission believed
it inadvisable to change the setback which would have provided for any struc-
ture to be approved by the Building inspector as to construction and esthetic
values. It was believed this would be an unfair burden on the Building
Inspector. Councilman Anderson moved, seconded by Councilman Armstrong, that
the Planning Commission's recommendation denying setback change on Stanley
Street be sustained. Motion passed unanimously.
3. Recommending favorably upon Clarence Schott's petition to subdivide Lot 1,
Block 17, Central Park No. 2 into two lots. City Attorney McCarthy submitted
a diagram of this subdivision and advised that the protestants practically
withdrew their objections when assured by Mr. Schott that the backs of the
houses to be built would be as attractive 'as the fronts.
