I
CJ
I
i
was that the Cit Council 211
City give a decision as to the ownership of the Redwood City
Yacht Harbor and who is to have permanent control,.management and maintenance
of same. Enclosed was a letter from the Sequoia Yacht Club suggesting im-
provements to the recreational area.
City Manager Blom reported that the city has not as'yet received a formal
deed to this property which Mr. Stafford.is offering to the city.
Mr. W. C. Railing presented a petition signed by thirty-five property owners
objecting to the City Council accepting a deed from Daniel Stafford to
property on Hopkins Street between Lowell and King Streets upon the grounds
that the property, if accepted by the city, will be used for purposes'con-
fel trary to the intent of the zoning ordinance and will be detrimental to first
I residential property. Mr. Railing explained that the property owners were
objecting on the grounds that the Recreation Commission has not assured the
neighbors of a suitable building and suitable grounds being erected. He
asked that the property owners be consulted as to the type of building pro-
posed to be erected there and also that they be assured that the city has
sufficient funds to maintain this property. He said the petitioners were
not opposing a cultural building as interpreted by Mr. Stafford's gift but
he did not believe that money should be taken from other projects as pro-
vided in teh bond issue to improve this property. Mayor Hilton assured Mr.
Railing that before the city accepts Mr. Stafford's gift the neighbors
would be assured that nothing would be done that would be detrimental to
adjoining property.
In regard to the employment of a consultant to plan the recreational areas,
City Manager,Blom advised that he had not had an opportunity of interviewing
Mr. Merchant although he had interviewed one other man. He stated he hoped
to have a recommendation.at the next meeting of the Council in regard to a
consultant or engineer to proceed with the plans. This matter was placed
on the agenda for the next meeting.
In regard to the ownership of Yacht Harbor, Counciiman Armstrong was of
the opinion that the permanency of the Yacht Harbor should be determined
before any more.money is spent on it. City Manager Blom advised that the
area now occupied by the Yacht Harbor is under the control of the Port Com-
mission who is unwilling to lease it permanently for Yacht Harbor use, in-
asmuch as it can not 'give a guarantee that it will not be needed for
development of the Port, however, the Commission has no objection to its
f
continued occupancy. Insofar as dredging the channel,'as suggested bythe
Yacht Club, is concerned, City Manager Blom advised this would be a very
expensive undertaking and he did not believe the city would receive any
governmental aid. An alternate location has been suggested on Bair
Islands however, it would be probably three or four years before that site
is available for occupancy. This location involves the building of a road,
the plans for which are complete.. City Manager Blom suggested that until a
suitable location can be found for the Yacht Harbor that only temporary
repairs be made at the present location. Councilman Armstrong moved, seconded
by Councilman McNulty, that. a communication be directed to the Recreation
