30 <br />to a permit and he did not believe the Foresters Hall had such a record <br />which would justify denying the permit. Councilman Britschgi asked for <br />a report at the next meeting from the City Attorney as to what the Council <br />could do to allow the Police Department to grant dance permits and avoid <br />having this matter come before the Council every- meeting. City Attorney <br />McCarthy advised that the ordinance in question had been adopted in 1924 <br />when the council retained jurisdiction over public dances. The ordinance <br />is drawn so that the Council would determine for itself what dances it <br />would permit and he advised that until this ordinance is revised the <br />Council had the power and the responsibility of granting such permits. <br />The motilin before the Council passed with Councilman Armstrong voting in <br />the negative. <br />Councilman McNulty moved, seconded by Councilman Britschgi, that dance permit <br />be granted Court Madrone No. 158, F. of A. to conduct dances Saturdays, <br />June 23 and 30 until 1:00 A.M. Under the .question, Councilman. Ganger <br />said he was opposed to dances lasting until'1:00 A.M. and if the hour of <br />closing was changed to 12:00 Midnight he would Rote for the permit. Council- <br />man Britschgi withdrew his second. .• Councilman Anderson moved that .the permit <br />be granted to Court Madrone No. 158, F. of A. for Saturdays, June 23 and.30 <br />until 12:00 midnight. Motion passed with Councilman Armstrong voting in <br />the negative. <br />Application was received from the Italian Catholic Federation No. 6 for permis- <br />sion to hold a dance at Foresters Hall, Tuesday, July 3, until 1:00 A.M. <br />Councilman Britschgi moved the permit be granted subject to the 12:00 <br />midnight closing. The motion was seconded by Councilman McNulty. Under <br />the question, there was some discussion as to whether the permit should <br />be granted at this meeting as it was in advance of the next meeting of <br />the Council. The question was also raised as to whether or not the per- <br />mit should be granted before the Council.took definite action on the matter <br />of whether or not beer was going to be,allowed to be sold. Councilman <br />Britschgi withdrew his motion and it was decided to lay the matter over to <br />the next meeting. After further discussion, however, it was the general <br />opinion that the permit for the.dance should be granted at the present <br />time. in order to allow the organization time to make the necessary arrange- <br />ments. Councilman Granger moved, seconded by Councilman Anderson, that <br />the dance permit be granted subject to the 12:00 midnight closing. Under <br />the question, Councilman Armstrong asked whether it was the.concensus of <br />opinion that the Council is neither approving or disapproving the sale of <br />liquor at the dance, which opinion was concurred in by the Council.
