114'
and ratifying the action of the City Manager in publishing notice calling for bids.
Motion passed unanimously.
City Manager Blom advised that the Fire Chief's car is being painted and the Fire Chief
does not have a garage in which to keep it. He owns the lot across the street
from where he is living- and intends to build a home there in the future. It was
the suggestion of the City Manager that the Fire Chief be allowed to build a gar-
age on this lot for the purpose of housing the city's car and explained that while
it would be in violation of the ordinance, it would be for the purpose of protect-
ing city property. The general consensus of the Council was that the adjoining
property owners should be contacted to see if they would have any objection.
City Manager Blom reported that Cole Stafford, Sergeant in the Police Department, was
going to attend the Institute of Delinquency Control at the University of Southern
California and that it would be necessary to provide for his expenses. The Council
indicated approval would be given when the claim was presented.
City Manager Blom presented a report from the Fire Inspector as to his activities since
last June. He has made a total of 2b3 inspections in major buildings, 170 in
office buildings, stores. -etc.,. and has followed up with 172 re -inspections. There
were 552 violations of the Code of which 112 were corrected voluntarily. Many
of the violations require the complete tearing down of the building. He has taken
photographs of many of the violations and has notified the owners of the buildings.
In general, the cooperation from the property owners has been very good.
Councilman Swift left the meeting.
Councilman Granger protested the truck traffic on Edgewood Road. City Manager Blom
stated that Edgewood Road was the road most suited for.this traffic and the majority
of the Council did not believe in rerouting it to any other street. Chief Collins
reported that only one minor accident had been reported on Edgewood Road during 1946.
Councilman Granger requested that action be taken to eliminate the island on Durlston
Road. City Manager Blom•advised that a plan had been devised to combine the two
islands and cut off the ends to eliminate the traffic hazard. The matter of fixing
the islands was placed on the agenda. City Manager Blom explained that the matter
was on the program to be fixed as soon as the necessary manpower was obtained. He
said he would bring in a recommendation at the next meeting as to how to remedy
the situation. Councilman Britschgi also believed some method should be worked out
to patch some of the streets in the city.
Claims No. 933 to 907 in the amount of $16,437.93 were approved and ordered paid on
motion of Councilman McNulty, seconded by Councilman Britschgi. Motion passedLE
unanimously.
Adjournment.
RALPH S. DODGE n
Clerk of the City of Redwood City
n
