n <br />i <br />R <br />them sueo;ess on the Commission. - F - <br />COMMUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM THE PLANNING COMMISSION attached to which were new rules <br />and regulations of the Commission. A copy was presented to each member of the <br />Council. The communication was ordered filed. <br />APPLICATION FOR RESTAURANT LICENSE was received from D. Dee to operate a restaurant to <br />be known as DD,'s at 1436 E1 Camino Real. The premises had been approved by the <br />health, Building and Fire Departments and a favorable report received from the <br />Police Department. The necessary license fee was attached to the application. <br />Councilman Britachgi moved, seconded by Councilman Werder, that the permit be <br />granted. Motion passed unanimously. <br />COMMUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM THE AMERICAAI LEGION, REDWOOD CITY POST No. 105, enclosing <br />lease covering property known as the Veteran's Hall. The City Attorney advised <br />that he had examined the lease and found it to be in order. The terms of -the <br />lease provide for a twenty year lease at $1.00 per year and with a provision for <br />enacellation by the city upon 90 days notice. Councilman Holmquist moved, seconded <br />by Councilman McNulty, that the City Manager be authorized to execute the lease <br />with the effective date being July 1, 1947- Motion -passed unanimously. <br />COMMUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROkd THE AMERICAN LEGION urging the Council to give.consid- <br />eration to a suitable site -for an armory. City Manager Blom advised that Major- <br />General O'Sullivan had informed him that before a community would be given favor- <br />able consideration, it would be necessary for the community to provide a commanding <br />officer•for the unit, there must be a real interest on the part of the community <br />for a unit of the National Guard and a site must be provided. The state will erect <br />the building if the city provides the site. There are not enough funds at the <br />present time to erect a permanent building at all sites and it was planned to erect <br />a temporary building until sufficient funds were available to build permanent <br />buildings. The temporary building would then be turned.over to the community for <br />recreation or other purposes. <br />Mayor Hilton was of the opinion that the initative should come from veterans' <br />organizations rather than from the Council. Councilman Granger believed that a <br />committee should be appointed from among.the veterans' organizations and service <br />clubs to study the question and see if it is possible to carry out the wishes of <br />the National Guard, <br />A communication was also received from the Kiwanis Club urging the location of <br />an armory in the city. <br />Councilman Swift moved, seconded by Councilman Holmquist, that a committee be <br />appointed to see.1f the community is interested in having an armory located here. <br />Motion passed unanimously. <br />C014MUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM.THE SAFEWAY STORES, INC. requesting an expression from <br />the Council as to its plans in regard to the variance which had been granted by <br />resolution for the use of Lots 21 and 22, Block 3, Redwood Highlands, and for <br />which plans had.been submitted to the Council on April 7, 1947. There was some <br />discussion as to whether the Council could legally grant a variance, it being the <br />City Attorney's opinion that it could not. Former City Attorney McCarthy was in <br />the audience and advised that at the time the variance was granted he could find <br />nothing in the ordinance which prohibited it and he had advised at that time that <br />the Council did have the power to do so.
