the benefit gained from attending the conference but stated that the State con_- _24-1 <br />Terence will be held in October and he believed that would be worthwhile. Councilman <br />Werder moved, seconded by Councilman Holmquist, that the Chief of Police not attend <br />the International Conference but that it be favorably considered that he attend the <br />State Conference in the near future. Motion passed unanimously. <br />COMMUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE in regard to application to install <br />sone benches throughout the city. It wa the recommendation of the Community Develop <br />ment Section of the Chamber that the application be denied and further recommended <br />that the benches be provided through the Martin Transportation Company and a com- <br />mittee appointed to work with Mr. Martin to work out design,etc. for such benches. <br />Councilman Holmquist moved, seconded by Councilman McNulty, that the recommendation <br />of the Chamber of Commerce be accepted. Motion passed unanimously. <br />COMMUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM WILLIAM R. KITAGAWA submitting a claim for $32.61 which <br />he claimed was due him as a result of fire to the roof of his residence as a result <br />of carelessness on the part of the Fire Department. Councilman Werder moved the <br />matter be referred to the insurance carrier and the claimant notified of the action <br />of the Council. The motion was seconded by Councilman Holmquist. Under the <br />question, City Manager Blom advised that the city has no porperty damage insurance <br />other than automobile. Councilman Werder was of the opinion that the city should <br />have a resurvey of its insurance and believed that the city should have property <br />damage insurance to protect itself in cases of this kind. He withdrew his motion <br />and moved that the claim be denied inasmuch as the city does not feel it has any <br />responsibility in the matter. The motion was seconded by Councilman Britschgi and <br />passed unanimously. <br />Councilman Werder moved, seconded by Councilman McNulty, that.s. report be had from <br />the City Manager as to steps taken to modernige the city's present insurance <br />program. Motion passed unanimously. <br />APPLICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM ST. PETER'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH for permission to hold a <br />bazaar on lot next to the church in the early part of September. Councilman Swift <br />moved, seconded by Councilman Britschgi, that the permit be granted. Motion <br />passed unanimously. <br />i <br />III COMMUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM CITY ENGINEER LONGSON recommending that an extension of <br />I thirty working days be granted the Gabriel Construction Company on their contract <br />for the installation of the Valota Road sanitary sewer. The present contract ex- <br />pired on July.30, 1947. Councilman Werder moved, seconded by Councilman Swift, <br />that the recommendation be accepted. Motion passed unanimously. <br />C0gUNICATION WAS RECEIVED FROM SAFEWAY STORESs INC. requesting that it be acknowledged <br />that plans had been submitted for building at the corner of Brewster and Arch Street <br />in accordance with variance granted by the Council and also requesting that they be <br />I <br />notified as to why the plans as submitted did not meet with the approval of the <br />Council. There was some discussion as to whether such a communication would bind <br />the Council and City Attorney Currie expressed the opinion that he -believed it was <br />merely a request that whatever right they now have be protected.. He stated, however, <br />that he had not studied the letter and said he would like an opportunity to do so. <br />Councilman Werder moved, seconded by Councilman McNulty, that the matter be referred <br />to the City Attorney for a report from him at the next meeting of the Council. <br />Motion passed unanimously. <br />
