Mr. William Gross, owner, <br />appeared and stated the building was leased to Veterans for a period of two years <br />who would be put at a diBadvantage and financial loss if they were forced to move <br />r <br />at this time. He stated the Veterans had borrowed from the bank to finance their <br />business, and that there was no place into which they might move at this time. Coun- } <br />oilman Werder suggested the possibility of Mr. Gross contacting the Building.Inspee- <br />tor and Fire Inspector in an effort to find out what could be done to correct the <br />wiring, install vents, and anything else necessary to fix the building up for the <br />balance of the lease. Mr. Gross stated he was willing_to do this, stating further <br />that he would tear the building down at the expiration of the lease. Councilman <br />Werder so moved, -seconded by Councilman Granger, and carried unanimously. <br />LETTER FROM LAW -DEPARTMENT, CITY OF SACRAMENM REGARDING TELEPHONE RATE INCREASE HEARING lis <br />requesting that the City of Redwood City appropriate $500 toward the planned defense <br />to be presented at the Utilities Commission hearings. It is proposed to employ <br />. It <br />Reginald L. Vaughn as legal counsel and.Mr. Harry D. Butler as consulting engineer <br />i <br />to represent the Cities of California at this hearing. Letter was received from " <br />Mr. C.. G. Uhlenberg advising that he had known these two gentlemen for some years, <br />had appeared with them before the Commission and recommending them very highly, <br />recommending further that the proposition appears to be very effective and the best <br />plan to obtain the -best results at nominal cost. Councilman Granger moved, seconded <br />by Councilman McNulty,.that in view of Auditor Uhlenbergs recommendation, we appro- <br />priate the amount requested and that all other cities on the Peninsula be advised <br />of our action. Motion carried unanimously. <br />COMMUNICATION FROM THE CITY OF SAN BRUNO received asking what this City intended to do <br />about the telephone rate hearing. City Clerk was directed to advise them of the ` <br />Councils action referred to above. <br />MISS LOUISE G. SCHMIDT appeared representing her sister and mother, Mrs. Leone Schmidt <br />of lbbo Valota Road. She complained of the location of sewer lateral as laid out t. <br />by engineers, and submitted sketches illustrating her claim that laterals were <br />improperly located. City Manager Blom explained there was nothing seriously wrong <br />with the set-up, and stated that he had.received many phone calls from Miss Schmidt <br />and had done everything possible to straighten the matter out with her. He recom- <br />mended leaving the.lateral as now installed with no further change, inasmuch as the+ <br />sewer is quite deep at this point and any change would be expensive. _Councilman <br />Granger asked Miss Schmidt if she would be willing to deposit cash or bond to cover. <br />cost of changing the lateral, as well as the assessment covering the installation <br />of main sewer. Miss Schmidt agreed to this arragement. Councilman Werder asked <br />City Manager if the above arrangement would eliminate any objections, and upon <br />Mr. Bloms reply that it would, Councilman Granger moved, seconded by Councilman � <br />i <br />Werder, that the matter be referred to City Manager to work out a reasonable amount; <br />to be covered by bond or cash by the Schmidts. Motion carried unanimously. <br />i, <br />PERRY STREET PARKING COMMITTEE, Councilman Britschgi,' reported they had met with some <br />difficulty in that they were informed by the owner that lot in question was not for <br />.I� <br />sale. City Attorney will check further into the matter and report back at the ;1 <br />next meeting. <br />
