PLANNING COMMISSION RECOMMENDED DENIAL OF PETITION OF GRACE STEWART to rezone Lot 5, Block 22, Eagle Hill Addition (117 Madison Avenue) From R-4 to C-1 District. Twenty-one protests were filed with the Planning Commission. Councilman Morgan moved approval of recommendation, seconded by Councilman Swift, and carried. ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION. A letter from Dr. H. D. Chope, Director of Department of Public Health and Welfare, P. 0. Box 110, Redwood City, stated this subject was receiving more and more attention, and indicated various methods that could be used to help + control this condition. A U. S. Technical Conference on Air Pollution was to be held in Washington, D. C. on May 32 4., and 5, 1950. The letter solicited coopera- tion in effort to control atmospheric pollution. Councilman Morgan moved that the matter be referred to the City Manager to communicate with them and express the Councilts desire to cooperate with them, seconded by Councilman Spillers, afid carried. BOOKER T WASHINGTON MEMORIAL HALF DOLLAR. A letter was addressed to the Mayor from the Booker T Washington Birthplace Memorial, Virginia, signed by Andrew F. Jackson, Director of Public Relations, stating that Congress had authorized the minting of ^ this Half Dollar to assist their organization in an effort to perpetuate his ideals and teachings. Funds from the sale of these coins would be used to finance a class "A" motion picture based on his life and achievements. A blank was enclosed for the purpose of ordering coins. Councilman Granger moved that a reply to the letter be made stating that this had been referred to members of the City Council, seconded by Councilman Morgan and carried. Mayor Werder thought in deference to them it might be well to contact each individual member. I REMOVAL OF BARRICADE AND PAVING OF 600 BLOCK OF OAK AVENUE. A letter signed by Raymond E. Shore, 659 Oak Avenue and Frank Barnecott, 651 Oak Avenue was submitted during the Council meeting. They asked that the City acquire property to extend Oak Avenue. Councilman Morgan moved that the letter be referred to City Attorney Currie and City Engineer Jain for investigation and report back at the next meeting, seconded by Councilman Swift, and carried.' HOOVER SCHOOL SITE. Councilman Holmquist reported that the Real Estate Committee had met with the School Board and the Pound site had been discussed. They would like to pay the City $3250 for the piece of property, City still to assume ovnership to well and receive funds of sale of water to S & W, School Board to bear cost of doing away with pumphouse and submerging well.
