.I
i
284
PETITION FOR STREET IMPROVEMENTS, "FLORENCE STREET, FRIENDLY ACRES. Petition was
presented signed by 12 property owners asking that the width of Florence Street be
paved from Yarsh Road to Bay Road, as orginally specified in the proposed street
work. They objected to the expense of $?700 for header boards, that could be used
toward paving the center strip, and thought it would be less expensive while men
and equipment were on the job to completey pave the street in the beginning. Letter
and petition was presented by Mrs. Alfred Jones, 3711 Florence Street,. City Eng; neer
stated plans show 56 feet between curbs and this was not a street eligible for Gas
ti
i
Tax Funds. City Engineer thought it would cost between 03500 and $4000 for the paving,
Mr. A. Salmon appeared, representing residents in the area and the Taft Improvement
Club, and thought the unpaved strip would be a hazard to parked cars, children would
play in the middle if unpaved, some cars would have to make a "U'" turn because of the
island, and driveways angle off the street in such to way that coming from the south it
would be almost impossible to turn into a driveway from a 17' strip. Ways and means
were discussed re cost for center strip. City Engineer stated if Gas Tax money was
to be used the project would have to be approved by the State Division of Highway
Department. Bay Road came into the picture as Florence could not very well be con-
sidered a major street unless continued through to Fifth Avenue. Councilman Royer
moved that the City Attorney and City Engineer be instructed to determine if Florence
Avenue between Marsh Road and Bay Road could be recommended as a major street, also
Bay Road from Florence to Fifth Avenue, and report back to the Council, seconded by
Councilman Spillors. Resolution must accompany request to the State when making such
request. Mayor Britschgi suggested meeting with Capt. Grant and advising him of the
present problem. _
RESOLUTION 1047 DECLARING FLORENCE STREET BETWEEN MARSH ROAD AND BAY ROAD AND BAY ROAD BET011
FLORENCE AND FIFTH AVENUE MAJOR STREETS was offered by Councilman Royer, seconded by
Councilman Granger. It was conceded that these would eventually become streets of
major importance after a fire station location in this area. Motion carried on roll
call. If the City failed to get the State' to consider these as major streets Mayor
Britschgi on the suggestion of City Engineer Jairi asked that Nr. Salmon talk to people
in area slong the line 'of splitting the cost of center strip of paving with the City,
Mr. Salmon thought it would be' cheaper at any rate to have the job completed once begun,
Mr. Jain stated'thecontractor, Mr. Sorensen would be willing to hold up the work
for a week or two and word would be received from the State within 'a few days.
MR. 1`81. L. GOOGGIN WAS SWORN IN AS 1,21IBER OF THE PERSONNEL BOARD BY CITY CLERK DODGE and
he was happy to be of service in this capacity.
