458 i'
February 142 1955, relating to substitute parking area. Item 3 of Mr. Lebsack's
letter is as follows:
FOLLOWING:
"The Committee composed of Floyd Granger, Pasco Balzarini, Alyn Beals,
H. Bray and John Edwards, met on September 24th to determine what type
of tree would be most desirable on E1 Camino, between Whipple and
Brewster.
The Committee chose the "Blirieana", a purple -leaf, flowering plum.
The root structure and size indicate that they conform to the problems
along the highway. We also feel that the "Blirieana" will be a much
needed attraction at our northern entrance. The tree is very
beautiful and something of which the City can be proud.
The Committee also would like to recommend to the City Council that this
not be a "on -section" job. We would like this area to be a start to
beautifing all the entrances to Redwood City.
Also, on advice of Mr. Balzarini, Park Superintendent, we feel that this
should be started just as soon as possible. This is mainly due tothe
season and right now is the most desirable time. The cost of this iy1
venture will be revised downward from our earlier estimate, due to re- Ii
duction of cost of this particular tree".
Alyn Beals„ Park and Recreation Commissioner, spoke in favor of the tree proposal
and he urged that this project be done as soon as possible. This was followed
by discussion as to whether or not the project should be carried out in the
hothern area only until such time as it proved itself before starting on the other
entrances tot he City.
Councilman Britschgi moved that the Park and Recreation Commissions' recommendation
be approved and they start on the first entrance, the northerly entrance from
Whipple to Brewster Avenue on El Camino Real, seconded by Councilman Stout. This
was followed by a lengthy discussion on the amount of trees required (24), the
"City would accede to the proposal to eliminate the parking area outlined
in green from C -1-H zoning classification upon condition that in the
event all or any portion of the area is ever devoted to any use other than
off-street parking, the Southern Pacific Company will provide an equivalent
amount of off-street parking in the immediate vicinity of the station."
Councilman Granger explained the understanding that the grant would be given, the
_
Council to order paving when the funds are made available. The proposed street is
from James Avenue in a semi -circle over to Winklebleck Street. He further stated
that plan lines have never been set on Winklebleck Street. After the discussion,
it taas decided to hold this matter over for a study meeting.
COMMUNICATION FROM THE SOUTHERN *PACIFIC COMPANY REGARDING PROPOSED EXTENSION OF FREIGHT
SHED PARKING LOT.
