REPORT FROM BUILDING AND ELECTRICAL INSPECTORS. The Clerk read the report which
reads as follows:
The existing Redwood City Electrical Code was adopted by the City Council in 1941- It
was designed primarily to provide specific standards to regulate electrical installations.
This code also paralleled the San Mateo County Electrical Code in order to provide uniformity
of regulations throughout this area.
' At the present time the existing ordinance is definitely obsolete
Yand sets Redwood City
behind as far as a modern Electrical Code is concerned.
The permit fees do not cover the inspection costs nor are they broad enough to cover the
many electrical devices in use today.
Today's residential power demands have increased considerably due to the many electrical
appliances that are now available and entirely new to the industry compared with 1941.
Several provisions of the 1941 code are impractical and have been revised and amended
in order to meet today's standars.
In general, the new ordinance will provide uniformity of enforcement and regulation
with the San Mateo County Electrical Code. It will provide a sound electrical code to meet
today's requirements and in many instances save the home owner costly remodeling expenses
when appliances are installed.
The Electrical Code in this areais being carefully and continuously studied by a group
of electrical inspectors representing the various communities' Changes, corrections and
amendments to any electrical code are necessary to pace ever increasing electrical demands.
Respectfully submitted,
B. C. GYSELBRECHT, Electrical Inspector
S. H. KREISS, Building Inspector
Councilman Stout moved that the letter be accepted and filed and he offered introduction of the ordinance,
seconded by Councilman Britschgi. Councilman Granger'raised the question of requiring 100 amp switches to
be installed in all new houses. Mr. Didriksen, Business Manager Electrical Union $167, congratulated the
Council for taking this forward step. He stated that a better job could be done by checking with the other
Cities in regard to making the 100 amp switch mandatory, and at a later date this might be a uniform matter
throughout the Cities. He was of the opinion that this should not be considered at this time. By checking
with all the Cities there is a possibility that they could make it a uniform matter throughout the County.
Air. W. J. Farley, representing the Electrical Contractors, congratulated the Council for the action they
were taking in this matter. The motion carried.
Councilman Granger moved that his suggestion be referred back to the Building Inspector for future
consideration, seconded by Councilman Stout and carried.
