214 <br />because of the lack of gas stations on E1 Camino Real from San Francisco to Redwood City. The State <br />Highway Department have indicated that Whipple Avenue will be one of the main access roads to Bayshore <br />Highway. He stated that his company was of the opinion that they should tell the Council what they <br />wanted the property for an to state why they wanted this property rezoned. <br />Planning Commissioner TAcDonald stated that the Planning Commission turned this down until they have the <br />land use survey of the property in the area. This was followed by discussion after which Councilman <br />Granger moved that this matter be referred back to the Planning Commission with no prejudice. Council- <br />man Granger withdrew his motion because the public hearing had to be closed first. Councilman Stout <br />stated that he was of the opinion that IJir. TdcDonal's comments should have been in writing so that the <br />Council could have all the information before them before making a possible -wrong dicision. Council- <br />man Weiss wanted to know if they had to close the public hearing or could they continue this to the `. <br />first of October and at that time refer this matter back to the Planning Commission. City Attorney 1 <br />Currie stated that he did not think that this was the best policy and stated that the opposition could <br />ask to waive the time element and rather than take this chance they should close the hearing new and <br />refer this to the Planning Commission to act on their own initiative. Councilman Spillers moved that <br />the public hearing be closed, seconded by Councilman Weiss and carried. Council.man.VViess moved that <br />the Planning Commission's recommendation be upheld, seconded by Councilman Stout and carried. Council- <br />man1biss moved that this be referred to the Planning Commission and the City Clerk to make a note to <br />see that this is followed through, to be brought up for further consideration approximately October <br />15th, seconded by Councilman Spillers and carried. <br />PUBLIC HEARING, PLANNING COMMISSION RECOISAE14DATION TO DEN)f PETITION OF J. E. FARRAR TO REZONE. LOT 15, BLOCK <br />15, LENOLT (WHIPPLE NEAR INDUSTRIAL VTAY) FROM R-1 TO C-1. This is similar to the above denial and the <br />same remarks hold to wait for the land use survey. Hr. Christensen, representing the property owners., a <br />stated that his case was similar as that stated by 14r. Rukan, however, they did not intend to build <br />a.service station. Councilman Stout moved that the public hearing be closed, seconded by Councilman <br />Spillers and carried. Councilman Spillers moved that the Council uphold the Planning Commission's <br />recommendation to deny the petition to rezone, seconded by Councilman Weiss and carried. Councilman <br />Weiss moved that this matter be referred to the Planning Commission with the thought that the Planning <br />Commission will take this matter up on their own initiative, seconded by Councilman Spiller and carried. <br />Councilman Herkner stated that his committee had met on July 6th to interview the applicants for a full time <br />City Attorney, They interviewed four men. The,Committee recommended the appointment of Robert Costello, <br />Assitant City Attorney in San Jose for the last three years. The Committee feel that Ifs. Costello <br />has had three years experience in the type of work he would be doing for the City of Redwood City. <br />Councilman Granger stated that the Committee had made every effort to contact every attorney in the <br />City of Redwood City and that there had only been three persons interested. By taking everything <br />into consideration, the Committee thought that T)Tr. Costello would be the best suited to the City's <br />needs. Councilman Stout.moved acceptance of the Committee's report and the Mayor to be given authority <br />to contact 11r. Costello to see if he was still interested in the position, the Mayor to report back at <br />the next meeting and if possible ask Ifr. Costello to attend the next.Council meeting, seconded by <br />Councilman Granger with the understanding that the Council present were unanimous in their decision to _ <br />accept the Committee's recommendation.
