26 one-way streets. Councilman Weiss spoke about one-way streets or a possible alternate of continuing Harrison Avenue and Madison Avenue as through streets. He read the following prepared statement: "As a stop -gap this is the only logical method of approach as I see it. However I want to say that it would be a fallacy to take this action and then sit back complacently and await further developments. _ If the problem is to be solved, we must certainly pursue it until a sound and com- rI j plete solution is evolved. I therefor recommend that not only must we adopt this measure, but we must request the City Manager, the Panning Commission, the Traffic Committee and the City Engineer to pursue exploration of the problem as expeditiously as possible to deter- mine whether a logical and feasible one-way street pattern can be evolved, also whether any alternate solutions can be found such as widening and developing Jefferson Avenue into a six lane expressway by purchasing all properties on one side or the other of the thoroughfare. There is no question but that as development in the foothills continues, Jefferson Avenue traffic will continue to increase and make a proper solution ever more urgent. Louis Weiss, Councilman. Councilman Weiss offered introduction of the ordinance. Councilman Stout was of the opinion that James and Jefferson Avenues should be made one-way streets at a later date. They should give this new idea a chance and if it didn1t work then give consideration to the one-way streets. The motion was secbnded by Councilman Herkner. Councilman Granger spoke about the problem the City might be faced with in regard to the alley running from Adams to Fulton Street. He was concerned with the parking situation in the alleys. The Traffic Committee will check into this matter and if it becomes necessary they will make a recommendation to the Council. The motion carried. f. Councilman Weiss moved that this subject matter not be allowed to lay dormant but ' t 5 that this matter be referred to the City Manager, City Engineer and Traffic Committee to find a solution looking to the future. The Mayor was of the opinion that the Traffic Committee is already looking and checking into this. The only other solution is to widen Jefferson Avenue. Councilman Weiss was of the opinion that they had not gone into this matter completely. The Mayor asked Councilman Weiss if he would give consideration to requesting the Traffic Committee to recommend whether or not they should hire a traffic expert. Councilman Weiss moved to accept the Mayor's recom- mendation. This was followed by discussion. Councilman Stout seconded the motion which carried. RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING STOP SIGNS ON HARRISON AT MYRTLE, AND ON JEFFERSON AVENUE AT ALAMEDA DE LAS PULGAS. Councilman Weymouth offered RESOLUTION 2280 ESTABLISHING AND DECIA RING II CERTAIN DESIGNATED ENTRANCES TO DESIGNATED INTERSECTIONS TO BE STOP ENTRANCES and II moved its adoption, seconded by Councilman Granger and carried on roll call, Councilman Spillers being noted absent. INTRODUCTION OF ORDINANCE REVISING WATER CONNECTION CHARGES. Councilman Herkner moved that the City Attorney be instructed to prepare the necessary resolution and bring same back at the next Council meeting, July 15th, seconded by Councilman Weiss and ! carried. The proposed ordinance will be studied further before introduction. 1 RESOLUTION GRANTING VARIANCE TO F. ANDERSON ALLOWING FIVE FOOT REAR YARD. The Clerk read the title of the resolution. Councilman Herkner offered RESOLUTION 2281 GRANTING VARIANCE FROM CERTAIN PROVISIONS OF THE ZONING ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD CITY and moved its adoption, seconded by Councilman Weiss and carried on roll call, Council- man Spillers being noted absent.
