SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY AND PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
Patricia Brown, Redwood City Board of Education, noted that the Consortium
is a success due largely to people involved who have worked very hard. She
listed the accomplishments made in the first year and a half of its
existence, and noted they have the help of a consultant who has worked
with the Advisory Board, and they have focused on putting the program into
school sites. Five schools now have the program and soon Taft School and
Roosevelt School will have a program. They are also working on a program for
Garfield School. She noted that there is an Infant Care Program at Hoover
School.
Ms. Brown continued that additional funding has been received from the
Unitarian Church and the Messiah Lutheran Church, and that funding is also
received from the State through the Gain program which is a social welfare
program. Also, part of the program is to assist people who want to start
such a program, and the consultant is available to help them.
Ms. Brown concluded that they still need the City's moral support as
encouragement to others; that their next large project is to develop seed
money for subsidizing families who are not able to afford after school child
care, and that they will soon be presenting for signature a Joint Powers
Agreement to define roles of the City, the County and the School District.
They will also be coming back from time to time with updates about the
progress.
In answer to question regarding a summer program, Ms. Brown said the first
priority is care during the school year and second is summer care, noting
that the Kids Club and Policy Youth Club handle a summer project.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - --
2.
