MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
2. Report re Casa de Redwood
Councilman Bury reported on the 24 displaced households resulting from the
Casa de Redwood fire and recommended that the Redwood City Housing Office
offset the difference in payments. It was mentioned that there are some
other funds that are being generated in the Community that could be used to
reduce this obligation. There was discussion as to precisely what this money
was to be used for as well as ways to reduce the contribution of the City.
Peter J. O'Hara, 1280 Veterans Boulevard, Redwood City who is an employee of
of the Eugene Burger Management Corporation that acts as the manager of the
Casa de Redwood spoke. Mr. O'Hara stated that at the present time his firm
is working with the insurance company to rebuild what has been destroyed.
Their firm is working with a contractor who will determine what the actual
loss was and what needs to be redone. They have begun doing some
reconstruction. The insurance company is still trying to determine what are
the losses and the liability and /or negligence, if any. They expect the
building to be habitable in about 90 days, but they are unable to be specific
about the costs and the amount of time necessary to complete the repairs.
However, they hope to be able to move some of the displaced people back in
within six weeks.
The Section 8 assistance that many of the residents receive is specified for
the building and is not transferable. HUD authorized the Housing Authority
in San Mateo County to subsidize the rent of the displaced residents up to a
maximun of $495 per month. The best group housing that the Red Cross could
find is costing in excess of $700 per month. The Red Cross no longer has
funds available which leaves a shortage of approximately $200 each month.
Steve Krause, 111 Skyline Drive, Woodside, spoke, representing the Fire
Fighters of Redwood City, urging the Council to do everything possible to
support the displaced seniors. The Redwood City Fire Fighters in conjunction
with San Mateo Fire Fighters Local 2400 pledged $5,000 to help these
displaced residents.
M /S: Greenalch /Britschgi to allocate a maximum of $25,000 to be used on an
as needed basis to meet the difference between the $700 a month actual cost
and the $495 subsidy; this money is to be used to house the seniors that have
been displaced from Casa de Redwood; and the fund is to be administered by
the City Housing Office; and this emergency housing support will be subject
to reduction by matching funds from the Community.
Carried unanimously by voice vote.
MINUTE ORDER N0. 87 -92
Reg.Mtg.
5/18/87
Page 2
MINUTE BOOK NO. 47
Page No. 137
