Hughes, Enriqueta Rincon and Ethel Mears. <br />Wayne Kingsford -Smith and Max Gerfen were unable to attend and the Plaques <br />will be sent to them. <br />---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - -- <br />ORAL COMMUNICATIONS <br />a. Mrs. Marcell o Gaill ant, 2828 Carolina Avenue, spoke about the poor water <br />pressure in her neighborhood and confirmed her meeting with the Mayor for <br />June 3, 1987. <br />b. Robert Stiff, 102 Hillside, Woodside, President of Canada College, <br />advised that the Board of Trustees for Canada College has listed a series of <br />options regarding cost reductions and revenue producing items and one of the <br />options was to close the college. He said that the faculty and majority of <br />the Board members are not in favor of the option, and they will be meeting on <br />June 10th to discuss the subject. He noted that enrollment has been <br />increasing over the last few years; there are additional funds now available <br />from the State; the college continues to receive awards for its various <br />programs and asked for Council support. (see Item 2 below) <br />c. Gerald Mesner, , 227 Angela Drive, Los Altos, Presi dent of the Academic Senate, <br />el ected representati ve of the 285 f acul ty members . He said it would be <br />regrettable for such an institution that serves the people so well to be <br />closed. <br />---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - -- <br />MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST <br />2. Status of Canada College (1301.1) <br />Mayor Claire referred to the draft letter he has written to the Canada <br />College Board of Trustees concerning the possibility of closing the college <br />and asked for Council comments. <br />Discussion followed regarding the advantages of having the college in Redwood <br />City, that 42% of the students are Redwood City residents and many of the <br />faculty and employees reside in Redwood City; that many women are coming back <br />to college; the outstanding senior program for physical therapy; and the <br />damaging effects on enrollment such a threat could have. <br />Reg.Mtg. <br />6/1/87 <br />Pa ge 2 <br />MINUTE BOOK NO. 47 <br />Page No. 147 <br />
