Item No. 1 (continued)
Peter Uccelli, owner of the Harbor House Restaurant, stated Syufy does a
great job, but another access road in that area, is needed, and urged a
better solution to the traffic problems be developed
George Corey, 700 El Camino Real, Millbrae, attorney for Syufy, stated a
theatre is the best use of the land, as the peak hours are in the evening and
weekends, and not during normal commute hours. Both Nolte and Brian Kangas
Faulk traffic studies confirm that this proposal for 12- screen theatre is a
vast improvement over the drive -in as people park first then pay, eliminating
the traffic back -up. Syufy personnel direct traffic and with staggered show
times, traffic problems are minimized. Syufy is providing 15% of the cost of
the bridge over Redwood Creek which will impact favorably on projected
development in the area. If after one year it is deemed there is not
adequate parking, Syufy would use 2 lots as new parking lots. The City would
like the lots held for two years.
Jack Myhill, 470 Kiki Court, Pleasant Hill, General Manager of Syufy
Theatres, described starting and ending times of Syufy theatres; and
population data indicating the apparent viability of a 12- screen theatre at
this location.
There being no one else who wished to speak, Mayor Claire declared the public
hearing closed at 9:00 p.m.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Council recessed from 9:15 to 9:25 p.m.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - --
M /S: Chandler /Britschgi to uphold the decision of the Zoning Administrator,
with the deletion of Condition No. 4.
The motion failed on the following roll call vote:
Ayes: Vice Mayor Chandler
Noes: Councilmen Britschgi, Bury, Greenalch, LaBerge, Stangel and Mayor
Claire
CONSENSUS: Mayor Claire determined it to be the consensus of the Council
that the Use Permit as presented should be denied, but the proposal by Syufy
has merit and should be pursued, and therefore the Council wishes to retain
jurisdiction.
M /S: Brit schgi /LaBerge to retain jurisdiction regarding the application for a
Use Permit by Syufy to construct a 12- screen theatre at 555 E.
