modification west of El Camino Real must be installed simultaneously with the easterly
segment; the two eastbound lanes approaching the intersection will be changed, from
the existing availability of both lanes for through traffic, to one right only and one shared
left/through lane. This is necessary since only one eastbound lane will be available east
of El Camino Real.

Since this is a test and no improvements are to be made, except paint and signs,
modifications to improve safety or traffic handling can be made quickly to minimize any
problems.

On May 7, 2002, this Plan was presented and endorsed by the Redwood City
Downtown Business Group. A letter also went out to all property owners and tenants on
the 2600 and 2700 blocks of Broadway, asking for comments. All of the people
responding to the letter were in favor of the change, and represent slightly more than
50% of the 2600 block street frontage. The Plan has also been endorsed by those
people participating in the forums held by "Project for Public Spaces" (Fred Kent).

Alternatives
1. Do not reconfigure traffic and parking lanes as proposed. Broadway will remain as
is.

2. Reconfigure traffic and parking lanes on only a portion of the subject segment.

3. Direct staff to prepare a revised Plan incorporating Council direction.

Fiscal Impact
Total cost for the project is estimated at $20,000. Improvements will be installed
.~.. primarily by the City's Public Works Services Department, with Contractor assistance for
some specialized tasks.

Funds in the amount of $79, 195.35 are currently available for this project in the Traffic
Calming Program of the 2001-2002 Capital Improvement Program Budget, as part of
the Gas Tax Construction Fund.

ineering & Construction City Manager
S/library/reports/richard/broadway lane reconfiguration
