Item No. 7 (continued) <br />Report of City Manager and Chief of Police 6/10/85 and supplemental reports <br />6/25/85 and 7/12/85. <br />Petition in support of Shooter McGee's dance permit <br />Petition in opposition to the dance permit <br />Mayor Britschgi declared the public hearing open at 8:37 p.m. <br />Bruce Roberts, 801 Welch Road, Suite 205, Palo Alto, attorney representing <br />Shooter McGee's, stated that it was his understanding that the site has been <br />in use since the 1940's as variously a restaurant, bar and dance hall prior <br />to its occupation by his client; listed various newspaper columns and <br />advertisements, and citation by the Chamber of Commerce, praising Shooter <br />McGee's from an entertainment standpoint; commented on the costs of <br />renovation since the property was rented in November 1984; reviewed the <br />process of their efforts to meet the City's requirements; the necessity to <br />hire private security patrols because of complaints of neighbors; described <br />other possible sources of disturbances in the area; and indicated the <br />intention to expand the parking to accommodate the crowds ranging from 200 to <br />300 persons. <br />Joel Cohen, President of J.M. Cohen, Inc., Environmental & Occupational <br />Health Services, 1261 E. Hillsdale Boulevard, Foster City, reported on a <br />noise study done by his firm at the request of the attorney for Shooter <br />McGee's. (For details, see file of documents submitted by Bruce B. Roberts, <br />Inc. dated July 12, 1985 ) <br />The following persons also spoke in support of issuance of the dance permit <br />for Shooter McGee's: <br />James Clarke, 61 Amherst, Atherton, employee of Shooter McGee's <br />Walter Hoque, 1933 E. Bayshore Road, producer of Tuesday night comedy show at <br />Shooter McGee's <br />Lois Turner, 267 W. Oakwood Boulevard <br />Louis Glick, 926 Woodside Road <br />The following persons spoke in opposition to granting the dance permit for <br />Shooter McGee's: <br />C.W. "Andy" Anderson, 1591 Regent, President of the Regent Court Neighborhood <br />Association, noted that representatives of various other Redwood City <br />neighborhood associations are present to give their support. He read a <br />letter directed to Council from the Director of Nursing, Woodside Women's <br />Hospital, 1600 Gordon, where care is given to women with eating disorders, <br />chemical dependency, alcoholism, and emotional problems, and which needs to <br />provide a healing atmosphere for the patients; that despite cooperative <br />efforts of the manager and security personnel at Shooter McGee's, they are <br />concerned because of the disturbances, vandalism to their property, and <br />similar activities of patrons once they are beyond the confines of the <br />restaurant, and believed that granting the dance permit is detrimental to <br />their patients, and inappropriate in a residential neighborhood. <br />Reg.Mtg. <br />7/15/85 <br />Page 7 <br />MINUTE BOOK NO. 45 <br />Page No. 513 <br />
