Item No. 7 (continued)
Mr. Anderson provided background leading to the formation of the Regent Court
Neighborhood Association, and described some of the problems confronting the
neighbors of Shooter McGee's and stated that even had the dance permit been -
issued by the Chief of Police, they would have been compelled to appeal to
the Council to revoke it. Among their concerns were noise, traffic
congestion, trespassing on private property, among others. He commended the
Police Department for their prompt responses to the frequent calls for
assistance.
Lawrence Damante, 1575 Gordon Street
Manuella Henry, 1584 Regent Street
Linda Ashley Morocco, 44 Orchard
Michael Fields, 700 South Flower Street, Los Angeles, attorney stated that he
represents Mrs. Morocco, primarily because she is named in the appeal letter
by Bruce Roberts on behalf of Shooter McGee's, which letter implies that the
denial of the dance permit is based on her complaints alone, and called
attention to the number of people in the audience who have the same objectons
to Shooter McGee's. He stated that extra security patrol of the
establishment has not solved the problem, and responded to various other
points made by the appellant, and also refuted the noise study as not having
been an independent analysis.
Mark Sweyer, 908 Peggy Lane, Menlo Park, applicant for the dance permit,
replied to questions by Council regarding previous experience in this type of
operation, whether security personnel are specifically trained to handle
unruly patrons; with regard to numbers of patrons; and what attractions or
entertainment is provided on given nights.
Lisa Sweyer 908 Peggy Lane, Menlo Park, replied to questions by Council
regarding her inquiries of the Police Department as to statistics on police
response to incidents at other establishments in the City, and with regard to
number of employees, indicated that bcause of turnover, it varies between 70
and 75.
Mayor Brit schgi offered each opposing position to summarize briefly, and Mr.
Bruce Roberts spoke on behalf of Shooter McGee's , and Mr. Anderson spoke on
behalf of the adjacent residents.
Mayor Brit schgi invited anyone else present who wished to speak to do so. No
one else wished to speak.
M /S: Mosher /Rhodes to close the public hearing.
Carried unanimously by voice vote, and public hearing closed at 11:05 p.m.
M /S: Claire /Rhodes to uphold the decision of the Chief of Police and deny
the applicaton of Shooter McGee's for a dance permit.
Reg.
