ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
None
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - --
GENERAL
1. Mayor Britschgi read a petition received this evening containing 125
signatures of persons who participated in the Senior Nutrition Program who
prefer to have the program continued at the Fair Oaks Community Center, 2600
Middlefield Road, instead of being moved to Fair Oaks Senior Center, 2555
Middlefield Road. (302 -14)
Robert Newcomb, 1240 Woodside Road, signer of the petition, said that reasons
for the seniors preference for the present location have to do with
insufficient parking at the other location, the nature of the Senior Center
woodframe building with few fire exits, and the fact that seniors are
comfortable where they have been for several years.
Director of Human Services Irizarry reviewed the sources of funding of the
nutrition program, its administration and the City's role in the program.
Mr. Irizarry stated for the record that the Fair Oaks Community Center
welcomes the seniors at their present location and has not recommended the
nutrition program be moved, but staff is willing to cooperate in facilitating
the move, if the seniors wish to do so, stating he believes the users should
make the decision.
Discussion followed and Mr. Irizarry replied to questions and commented
concerning the history of the nutrition program at Fair Oaks Community
Center.
Carolyn Nobles, 3720 Country Club Drive, member of the Board of Directors of
Target Education and Welfare, said that the Board believed the move would
make more efficient use of staff, noting that it is hoped private parking
could be made available in the area and stating that the Council of Elders of
the Senior Center initiated the proposed change of location for meals. Mrs.
Nobles said she believed some of those opposed initially might now favor the
move.
M /S: Stangel /Rhodes to refer the subject of the location of the Senior
Nutrition Program and the petition to the Senior Affairs Commission for
recommendation.
CLARIFICATION: Councilman Stangel said that it is his understanding that the
Senior Affairs Commission will meet at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 10, 1984, and
the subject of his motion can be considered at that time with recommendation
to be made back to the City Council later.
Carried unanimously by voice vote.
