Item No. 8 (continued)
Chief Guardino stated that the object of issuing traffic citations for
speeding is to slow traffic which is also the reason for using marked cars.
He noted that warnings are often given to motorists when the traffic error
does not merit a citation.
Jon Pieroq, Finger Avenue, objects to press references to
neighborhoods, stating there is an areawide traffic probl
should keep an open mind while considering solutions. He
Avenue is a designated traffic carrier, and an additional
there would not have a great impact on the present 19,000
the road.
any battle between
?m and residents
said that Whipple
2,000 cars diverted
per day now using
Paul Hoerenqa, 878 Edgewood Road, urged Council to give careful consideration
to the staff report, noting that the Traffic Engineer has prepared a
professional survey.
Judith Bursak, 1831 Whipple Avenue, said she is concerned about the present
heavy traffic on the street and protested any plan to divert any traffic on
to Whipple. Mrs. Bursak read a statement regarding traffic problems on
Whipple. (Statement was not fi led. )
Mike Bursak, 1831 Whipple Avenue, read a statement objecting to traffic being
diverted on to Whipple and referred to a Chamber of Commerce map indicating
Edgewood Road is the direct route to I -280. Mr. Bursak recommended that:
Edgewood be straightened; that stripes be installed so that the street can
carry 4,000 cars per day; that Wellesley Crescent be made one -way as
recommended by staff; that street lighting on Edgewood be increased; that if
diverters are constructed, Edgewood residents be required to post a bond to
pay for removing them as they undoubtedly will wish to do after experience
with them; and suggested that there is great earthquake hazard on Whipple
because of the water main under the street and Edgewood should be preserved
as a traffic carrier to provide an alternate route.
Stuart Cooke, Whipple near Alameda, urged that the accident rate on Whipple,
indicating an increase, should be included on the map indicating accidents in
the area.
Pam Gearhart, Lowell Street at Whipple, said she presently enjoys using
traffic -free Edgewood to cross town and inquired as to the age of reckless
drivers there, suggesting they may be under 30.
James Sencenbaugh, 12 Iris, said that Whipple was not designed for the
present amount of traffic and cited the number of accidents which occur there
regularly. Mr. Sencenbaugh suggested a traffic report on the entire area and
some kind of areawide traffic management program is needed. He urged
continued traffic enforcement.
Paul Sapsin, 195 Alameda, inquired as to why Redwood City has three direct
routes to I -280 while neighboring cities have none.
Dorothy Batchelder, 430 Arlington, described her experiences with Berkeley's
street barricades to divert traffic and urged Council not to construct them.
She pointed out that they are not safe or convenient for residents of
neighborhoods they are designed to protect.
Reg.Mtg.
11/26/84
Page 3
MINUTE BOOK NO. 45
Page No. 188
