A recommendation was that a youth advisory board might <br /> be utilized for those under 18 and not U.S. citizens. <br /> <br /> Sarah Frivold and Cynthia Cruz stated they are 8th grade students at Kennedy <br /> School, and that this year's goals are to make Redwood City more safe and fun. <br /> They interviewed classmates, made movies and created surveys. Their report <br /> made findings and recommendations to the City Council, Parks and Recreation <br /> Department and Police Department. The report will be complete by May 23 and <br /> mailed out. <br /> <br /> Chairperson Greer stated that back in April of 2001, a request was made to <br /> Council to increase the funding to HSFA. In December of 2001, a joint study <br /> session with a needs assessment occurred where it was reported that a budget <br /> increase of $24,000.00 to a total of $270,000.00 was requested. He stated that of <br /> the 29 programs, eight of them are new programs. <br /> <br /> Mayor Claire opened the public hearing. <br /> <br /> Sheryl Bergman, thanked Council for ongoing support and appreciation for the <br /> very program. She urged approval of the full budget requested by the HHCC for <br /> the HSFA program. She stated due to the economic situation there is a great need <br /> in the community on the family level. <br /> <br /> Laurie Wishard, President of Family Service Agency of San Mateo County, <br /> thanked the staff, HHCC and youth who worked so hard to review the proposals <br /> and make recommendations. She stated the help of the City has been <br /> tremendous with the efforts at the Fair Oaks Senior Center to assist the frail <br /> elderly and the working senior in the community. She further stated last year's <br /> funding had greatly assisted and has allowed them to leverage additional funding <br /> from other sources to more than match funds and bring services to the <br /> community. She urged Council to go forward with the budget recommendations. <br /> <br /> Peter Reid, Executive Director of the Legal Aid Society, thanked Council and staff <br /> for past support in landlord/tenant issues. He stated that there are two new <br /> websites available in the County, one that provides information on agencies doing <br /> landlord/tenant work and links to resources. <br /> <br /> Andrew Frisch, thanked Council for the continuing non-profit support. He stated <br /> that times remain very tough, the challenges have not changed in recruiting and <br /> retaining staff to provide services and safety net for the community.
