Item No. 2 (continued)
Tom Jordan, Chairman, Senior Affairs Commission, referred to the subject
report of his Committee and reviewed it, noting that all of those who had
used the nutrition program services had been surveyed, and of the 1137
questionnaires sent out, only 150 were returned. In response to question,
Mr. Jordan said that 85 to 95 persons use the program daily with 697
different people during the year. In further response to question, he said
that the only substantive objection to moving the program to the Senior
Center is the lack of adequate parking, but acknowledged intangible
objections exist and urged the City to strive for an integrated community.
Michael Swartz, 10 Grand Street, TEWCI Board of Directors and Pastor of the
First United Methodist Church, referred to the letter of December 6, from
Lauress Wise, President of the Board and reviewed it. Pastor Swartz said he
is willing to work on consolidation of senior services which would be more
cost efficient and present better coordinated opportunities for seniors,
noting that perhaps a later date for the consolidation would be more
appropriate now.
Lola Kline, 875 Walnut, resident of Redwood Commons, objected to being tagged
"frail elderly ", stating most participants in the nutrition program at Fair
Oaks Community Center are perfectly capable of deciding that they prefer to
remain at the site for the program. Ms. Kline said participants enjoy each
other's company as well as the meal. She threatened to leave the program if
the move is made.
Bob Newcomb, 1240 Woodside Road, objected to the Seior Affairs Commission
survey, stating respondents were not identified and suggested that only those
regularly using the program should have been questioned.
Clarence Jewett, 3057 Page Street, suggested that the program offered more
than nutrition of the body to seniors. Mr. Jewett suggested also that
consolidation requires long term planning, coordination and leadership to be
effective.
Discussion followed concerning the weight which is given to the intangible
objections of seniors to the move as well as to the inadequate parking
situation which could possibly be improved.
M /S: Rhodes /Bury to consider recommendation 1 and 2 together separately
from recommendation 3.
The motion carried by majority voice vote.
MOTION WITHDRAWN: Councilman Rhodes withdrew his motion.
M /S: Bury /Rhodes to accept the Senior Affairs Commission recommendations 1
and 2, as follows:
1. The Senior Affairs Commission is committed to the provision of a
consolidated program of services targeted to frail elders and delivered
at established Senior Centers. Furthermore, the Senior Affairs
Commission strongly supports the principle of an integrated community in
all areas including senior programs.
Reg.
