He urged <br />approval of the project and offered the services of his organization, if <br />needed. <br /> <br />Larry Aikins, 859 Seminole, President of the Redwood CitylSan Mateo County <br />Chamber of Colllllerce, reported his Board favors the cooperative by a 20 - 1 <br />vote. Mr. Aikins said that as employers, his members know that if the economy <br />in this area is to thrive, "affordable" housing is essential, or everyone in <br />the colDDUnity will suffer when business must move elsewhere, because employees <br />cannot take jobs here. Mr. Aikins urged approval of the cooperative on behalf <br />of his Board of Directors. <br /> <br />Dr. Frank Sheetz, Fair Oaks Senior Citizens Development Center, 2555 <br />Middlefield Road, had to leave early and left a letter in support of the <br />project iIilich was read. <br /> <br />Bruce Norris, 470 Neptune Drive, said he is a private pilot and student at <br />Hayward State who has lived in Redwood Shores since he was nine years old and <br />would like to continue to live there after his IIBrriage. He stated that the <br />coop era live would offer him the opportunity to continue to live there, since he <br />could not expect to be able to purchaæ a: hOile in the usual way. Mr. Norris <br />urged Council to approve the Drojeot. <br /> <br />Marcia Diederich, 415 Beresford, representing the League of Women Voters of <br />South San Mateo County, stated the League supports the cooperative housing <br />project in Redwood Shores and urged Council to approve it. <br /> <br />Donna Kay fuQua, 22 Barcelona Circle, Sunrise Homeowners Association, reported <br />that Redwood Shores residents do not believe they have had good inforllBtion on <br />the project and are not opposed to "affordable" housing, but they are concerned <br />about increasing maintenance costs and want to be assured that the project can <br />handle them. <br /> <br />Kathleen Mahany, 1026 Vera Avenue, Redwood City Housing Cooperative <br />Assooia tion, said she has been assooia ted with the coopera live for some time <br />and is aware of the need for such housing, especially for young families. Mrs. <br />Mahany read from two pages of advertisements in a recent "Stanford Daily" of <br />jobs for young professionals and pointed out that the salaries offered would <br />make those taking the jobs eligible to purchaæ coop era live shares. She <br />pointed out that almost everyone is subsidized with regard to housing in one <br />way or another through various government mortgage prograœ. <br /> <br />Tom Jordan, 1 Odessa Court, representing the Redwood City Senior Citizens <br />Advisory ColllDittee, reported that the project meets their criteria for <br />"affordable" housing and that the architecture and landscaping are very <br />attractive, stating that the ColllDittee recolDDends unanimously that Council <br />approve the project. <br /> <br />Joseph Wucher, 18 Barcelona Circle, is acquainted with a HOD project which ran <br />out of funds, stating he is concerned if supplemental payments stop and <br />residents must make up the difference for lIBintenance costs. Mr. Wucher <br />suggested that the property tax will be as subsidized housing, so that other <br />Redwood Shores residents will have to bear a larger share of the tax burden. <br /> <br />John Wade, 171 Birch, M. A. in Public Policy Analysis, said he is acquainted <br />with œny kinds of housing projects and that competent management, good design, <br />good lIBintenance and good surrourxlings with reasonable density cause projects <br />like the one proposed to work well with compatible shareholders.
