tfA-¿

HOUSE AND SENATE PASS 30-DA Y
HIGHWAY SPENDING EXTENSION Bill,
CONFEREES NAMED FOR
TEA.21 REAUTHORIZATION

On Thursday, the Senate cleared the 7th
temporary extension of surface transportation
programs, sending the bill (H.R. 2566, which
passed out of the House ear1ier this week) to
President Bush. The measure would keep federal
highway programs running for an additional 30
days, giving the House-Senate conferees time to
negotiate the differences between competing
versions of the six-year reauthorization bill. The
current extension is due to expire on May 31,
2005.

Both the House and Senate appointed confer-
ees to negotiate the TEA-21 Reauthorization bill
this week. The Senate appointed 16 Republicans
and 14 Democrats including Senator Barbara
Boxer. Senate rules provide that the signature of
each conferee is valid for decisions relating to the
entire bill as opposed to the House whose confer-
ees' signatures are valid for certain parts of the bill
only. The House conferees are cOmprised of 17
Republicans and 16 Democrats including Califor-
nia representatives Gary Miller (R-42), Bob Filner
(0-51), Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-37), and
Ellen Tauscher (0-10).

The House and Senate will be out all next
week for the Memorial Day Recess and as of this
writing no schedule has been released for when
the conferees will meet on the bill.

HOUSING NEWSLETTER PROVIDES KEY
INFO AND lEG UPDATES

Although housing production in California has
increased significantly over the past two years, the
state still faces a huge challenge in trying to re-
spond to the housing needs of a population that
has been increasing by a half-million people each
year.

Read what state Housing and Community Develop-
ment Director Lucy Dunn has to say about this
challenge in the June issue of the League's monthly
electronic newsletter, Focus on Housing.

Published the first Monday of each month,
Focus on Housing is carries a variety of information
about housing, including question & answer inter-
views, feature articles, uln The News., , stories
about how cities are addressing their local housing
needs, updates on the League's Housing/General
PlanTask Force and pending legislation, and
infonnation on upcoming housing forums and other
events.
