7.A. - Page 3 <br />The selection guidelines include: <br />o A city chosen for a Sister City affiliation should be located in a country that has <br />established diplomatic relations with the United States. There should be the <br />potential for genuine people -to -people contact; communication and visitation <br />should be able to occur freely in both directions. <br />Aguililla is located in the country of Mexico, which has established <br />diplomatic relations with the United States. In Redwood City, there is <br />significant people -to -people contact with Aguililla due to a number of <br />Redwood City residents having family in Aguililla, and community <br />connections have been established by the Amigos de Aguililla in Redwood <br />City, Comite Ciudades Hermanas, and Asociacion Civil Amigos de <br />Aguililla. <br />o The proposed Sister City should be similar in population size, and/or role in the <br />region, and/or have cultural, educational, socio-economic, governmental, or other <br />tangible features in common with Redwood City, making it an appropriate Sister <br />City. <br />Aguililla celebrates many of the same cultural traditions celebrated in the <br />Redwood City community, including Mexican Independence, Dia de los <br />Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Danzas to Virgen Fatima, Posadas and <br />Judas. Additionally, there are socio-economic ties between Redwood City <br />and Aguililla by way of Redwood City families sending monthly monetary <br />support to their relatives in Aguililla. In addition, there are a significant <br />number of former Redwood City residents who have retired and moved to <br />Aguililla. <br />o There should exist in Redwood City an identifiable resident group or association <br />that favors the proposed affiliation and intends to pursue a meaningful program <br />after the relationship is established. <br />Amigos de Aguililla in Redwood City is supporting the development of a <br />Sister City relationship between the City of Redwood City and Aguililla. <br />Amigos de Aguililla in Redwood City is comprised of twenty-two local <br />community members. Amigos de Aguililla in Redwood City also plans to <br />collaborate on programming with two local non-profit groups, the Latino <br />Community Council of Redwood City, and Casa Circulo Cultural. Amigos <br />de Aguililla will work as the primary organization that will host the <br />delegations when they visit. <br />
