7.A. - Page 3
The selection guidelines include:
o A city chosen for a Sister City affiliation should be located in a country that has
established diplomatic relations with the United States. There should be the
potential for genuine people -to -people contact; communication and visitation
should be able to occur freely in both directions.
Aguililla is located in the country of Mexico, which has established
diplomatic relations with the United States. In Redwood City, there is
significant people -to -people contact with Aguililla due to a number of
Redwood City residents having family in Aguililla, and community
connections have been established by the Amigos de Aguililla in Redwood
City, Comite Ciudades Hermanas, and Asociacion Civil Amigos de
Aguililla.
o The proposed Sister City should be similar in population size, and/or role in the
region, and/or have cultural, educational, socio-economic, governmental, or other
tangible features in common with Redwood City, making it an appropriate Sister
City.
Aguililla celebrates many of the same cultural traditions celebrated in the
Redwood City community, including Mexican Independence, Dia de los
Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Danzas to Virgen Fatima, Posadas and
Judas. Additionally, there are socio-economic ties between Redwood City
and Aguililla by way of Redwood City families sending monthly monetary
support to their relatives in Aguililla. In addition, there are a significant
number of former Redwood City residents who have retired and moved to
Aguililla.
o There should exist in Redwood City an identifiable resident group or association
that favors the proposed affiliation and intends to pursue a meaningful program
after the relationship is established.
Amigos de Aguililla in Redwood City is supporting the development of a
Sister City relationship between the City of Redwood City and Aguililla.
Amigos de Aguililla in Redwood City is comprised of twenty-two local
community members. Amigos de Aguililla in Redwood City also plans to
collaborate on programming with two local non-profit groups, the Latino
Community Council of Redwood City, and Casa Circulo Cultural. Amigos
de Aguililla will work as the primary organization that will host the
delegations when they visit.
