Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors Regarding Marijuana: Results of a Public Opinion Survey in San Mateo County
© 2016 BRIGHT RESEARCH GROUP | 6

Race/Ethnicity, Age, Gender and Household Income of Respondents

MARIJUANA USE IN SAN MATEO COUNTY
The survey responses reveal that a majority of respondents (58 percent) reported that they
either currently use marijuana or had used it in the past. Of those who had used it, one in five
had used it recently—in the last week or last month. Respondents were not asked to
differentiate whether they were using it for medical or recreational purposes.

Public health officials are concerned that legalizing recreational marijuana would increase the
number of people who use marijuana. Most respondents who did not currently use marijuana
reported that the potential for the legalization of marijuana would not change their behavior.
Among those respondents who said that they have “never” used marijuana or that they last used
it “many years ago,” 72 percent said that legality would not change their behavior. However, one
in ten non-‐users said that they would use marijuana recreationally if it were legal.

Respondents are concerned with the prevalence of marijuana use in the communities and their
exposure to marijuana smoke. A majority (54 percent) were very concerned about youth using
marijuana in their communities, and 27 percent were very concerned about adults using
marijuana. Sixty-‐four percent of respondents said they were bothered when they were around
marijuana smoke.
8.A. - Page 81
