Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors Regarding Marijuana: Results of a Public Opinion Survey in San Mateo County
© 2016 BRIGHT RESEARCH GROUP | 5

Analytic Methods: The survey was launched on
June 30, 2016, and closed on August 15, 2016, for
a total of approximately six weeks. The survey
responses from the unique partnership links and
from the county’s own unique survey link were
combined and collated into one master dataset. A
total of 4,288 responses were collected during this
time period, and 257 of those responses were
removed for being partial or incomplete. The final
sample size was 4,031 responses. BRG completed a
descriptive analysis of survey results from all San
Mateo County residents. This report summarizes
the findings of this analysis.

Limitations: This study utilized a convenience
sample of San Mateo County residents. Partnership
organizations recruited participants through their
own networks and through deploying outreach
techniques that maximized the response rate. With
any convenience sample where random sampling is
not pursued, there may be sampling bias and
limitations to generalizing the results to the broader
population of San Mateo County. In addition,
sample size varies by question because some
respondents chose to skip questions in the survey.

About the Survey Respondents
The survey respondents represented many of San Mateo County’s diverse geographic areas,
racial/ethnic communities, age groups and income levels. There are 20 incorporated jurisdictions
and several unincorporated communities in San Mateo County. Every jurisdiction in San Mateo
County was represented in the survey sample. Approximately 43 percent of respondents came
from San Mateo, Redwood City, Daly City and South San Francisco—the four largest cities in San
Mateo County by population. A majority of respondents were people of color (57 percent) and
female (56 percent). Adults of different ages were well represented among the sample. Youth
under the age of 18 were under-‐represented because the target of the survey was adults over
the age of 18. In a county in which the median household income is $91,421, nearly two-‐thirds of
survey respondents (64 percent) had household incomes of less than $100,000.ii
City/Jurisdiction n P ercent
San Mateo 658 16%
Redwood City 416 10%
East Palo Alto 399 10%
Daly City 360 9%
South San Francisco 342 8%
Burlingame 304 8%
Pacifica 292 7%
San Bruno 249 6 %
Menlo Park 187 5%
Belmont 159 4%
Foster City 139 3%
San Carlos 132 3%
Other SMC
jurisdictions 394 10%
TOTAL 4,031 100%
Number of Surveys Collected in San Mateo
County, By City/Jurisdiction
8.A. - Page 80
