~ S ~etters of Community Support

133 Mapache Drive,
Portola Valley CA 94028

March 2, 1999

California Coastal Conservancy
1330 Broadway, Suite 1100
Oakland CA 94612

Attention: Jan Cardellino

Dear Ms. Cardellino:

I am writing to support the application of the City of Palo Alto for a San
Francisco Bay Access Grant from your agency.

Although I am' writing this as a private citizen, my current occupation is as an
elected Director of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. This public
agency has two properties on San Francisco Bay: Ravenswood Preserve and
Stevens Creek Shoreline, through which the Bay Trail runs. I also am a long-time
member of San Mateo County's Trails Advisory Committee, which has been promoting
the Bay Trail through the county.

Palo Alto's proposed link, between the Duck Pond and Byxbee Park, has fong
been a dangerous stretch for users because of the heavy vehicular traffic and ab-
sence of ~-road facilities. Having hiked this area in connection with a book I c0-
authored, Peninsula Trails. lam well aware of the current hazard.

Palo Alto's proposed trail will include interpretive signs, which win be important
in explaining the marshland restoration Palo Alto has been doing at this formerly very
disturbed area. This trail will be a worthy use of your funds-supporting a responsible
agency in providing safe, educational access along the shoreline.

I urge you to approve Palo Alto's application.

Yours sincerely,

hÁ~.~
;~y '¿r:kder

cc: Gregg Betts, Director of
Palo Alto Parks and Open Space

III-31

..
