The Coastal Conservancy, a state agency, works with the people of California to protect
. and improve coastal and San Francisco Bay resources and to provide public access to the
shore. Since 1980, the Conservancy has contnöuted more than $6 million to public access :
projects on the Bay. One of the Conservancy's priorities is to complete the San Francisco
Bay Trail. To move toward that goal, we have initiated a program of competitive grants,
using funding provided by the Legislature in 1998 and available this year. We hope to
add new segments to the trail, improve existing trail, add connectors and destination
points. The Bay Trail Project, administered by the Association of Bay Area Gòvem-
ments, will assist with the review and evaluation of proposals. in keeping with the Bay
Trail Plan.

A total of $500.000 in grant funds are availableo Applicants are expected to contnoute
part of the total cost of projects they propose, either in cash or in-kind seroces. Eligible
activities include pre-acquisition and acquisition costs, planning and design of trails and'
parks, landscaping, signage. and construction. These grants may be used to fund portions
of larger or multiphased projects as well. We are looking for projects that can commence
by fall, 1999. and be completed within 2 years.

Purpose

Program Overview

This grant program is designed to accelerate completion of the 4O0-miIe
Bay Trail and to improve existing Trail sections.

A vaiJable
Funds

A total of $500,000 will be disbursed.

Grant Size

Awards will range fÌ'om$25.000 to $100,000.

Schedule

Deadline for submittals: Completed applications must be received by
5:00 p.m., MONDAY MAR 15 1999 at: .

Coastal Conservancy
1330 Broadway, Suite 11 00
Oakland.
