Wiley) <br />U.S. Army Corps of Engineers <br />San Francisco District <br />333 Market Street <br />San Francisco, California 94105-2197 <br /> <br />Subject: <br /> <br />Construction of Levee Fences at Redwood Shores, San Mateo County, <br />California <br /> <br />Dear Mr. Fong: <br /> <br />This is in response to the City of Redwood City's (City) January 25, 2000, letter to Karen Miller <br />of my staff regarding the construction of the exclusion fences at the Redwood Shores levee <br />rehabilitation project and their January 26, 2000, letter to your office requesting an extension of <br />the Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) Clean Water Act permit (permit). The fencing issue was <br />addressed in our September 5, 1996, biological opinion (file #1-1-94-F-62) regarding impacts to <br />the salt marsh harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys raviventris) (harvest mouse) and the California <br />clapper rail (Ral/us /ongirostris) (clapper rail) resulting from the rehabilitation of the levee <br />system at Redwood Shores. Fencing was proposed by the City to provide protection for habitats <br />used by the harvest mouse and clapper rail and your office issued the Permit to the City based, in <br />!,l'Irt, n!'1 the prnjpC't rlPC:l'.rÏ.pt1on prlJvined by tht> City <br /> <br />The City has proposed to implement seven conditions in lieu of a permanent closure of the <br />levees. The City has developed these conditions to address the stated concerns of the Fish and <br />Wildlife Service (Service). These conditions include: <br /> <br />(2) <br />(3) <br /> <br />(4) <br /> <br />Gated trail entrance and fencing with restrictions to pedestrians to stay on designated <br />trails with fIDes ranging from $500.00 to $950.00 for violation of the closure. <br />Gates closed at night and during extreme high tides. <br />No pets allowed with fIDes ranging from $500.00 to $950.00 for violation for this <br />. restriction. <br />Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services allowed to trap at night, but remove traps <br />during the day. <br /> <br />(1) <br /> <br />"T"~ <br />
