. 3F•I
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
April 24, 2000 '
Subject
Purchase of One 1500 GPM Custom Fire Pumper Truck
Recommendation
Approve resolution authorizing the purchase of one 1500 GPM custom fire pumper truck
in the amourrt af $328,452:15 ftam H=Tch` Fire Trrlcks, Fnc. of Oakdafe, CA. under tre
cooperative purchase provision of the City of San Jose's purchase order #OP21821.
Background
The Fire Department currently has a 1979 Van Pelt Fire Pumper, which has exceeded its
useful life and is scheduled for replacement. Staff from Equipment Services and the Fire
Department have been meeting with various fire truck vendors regarding fire engine
specifications and found Hi fire pumper specifications meet our fire departments
equipment standard. Eight fire truck manufacturers recently competed for a multi-million
dollar bid on eleven fire trucks for the City of San Jose. Hi-Tech Inc. was the lowest
responsible bidder and won the bid award. Redwood City has used the services of Hi-Tech
Inc. in the past and found them to be very experienced and reliable.
Alternative
1. Do not approve the purchase of this fire pumper truck and continue to use our outdated
1979 fire pumper truck. Howeec, it would not be economically snund to invest in the
continued use and repair of this vehicle due to its age and condition.
2. Direct staff to solicit bids on our own for one fire pumper truck. However, this would
probably not be cost effective since this cooperative purchase was a major competitive
bid in which Hi-Tech Inc. was the lowest responsible vendor.
Fiscal Impact
Funds for the purchase of this replacement fire truck were approved and appropriated by
the City Council in the Fiscal year 1999/2000 Equipment Replacement Fund budget.
'
  r''°

Larry rwacz Peter Ingram Ed Everett
Public Works Supenntendent Public Works S rvices Director Ciry Manager
Attachment
1.
