Mar-13-00 03:13P THE EC COMPANY

QA--2'r . 03

ATTACHMENT E

Source of Funds

The District is not in a position to make a serious contribution to this project. We had agreed
earlier tc provide $SOK to help mitigate problems being created at Clifford, but we are unable to
~m~. \

We had to cut $1.2m out of our budget next year in order to provide a pay increase to our teachers
that exceeded the State's annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). We will give our teachers a
4% pay raise this year and a raise equal to the COLA next year. This increase is approximately
2% more than the State's COLA. Since each I % increase in pay costs approximately S400K. we
had to cut $800K to be able to provide the pay increase. We cut an additional $400K from the
budget in order to staff the libraries that are being built at each of the schools. We also are
scrambling to find money to equip the new libraries when they are finished.

The State of California has a competitive grant program that would pick up S3SK per site ($4SSK
in total) if we use equipment that is made out ofrecyclcd / recyclable materials and ¡fwe provide
matching funds.

A parent has offered to give SSOOK to the district to help pay for new playground equipment, on
one condition - that the City of Rcdwood City match their gift and provide SSOOK as well.

With SSOK from the District, S4SSK from the State of Cali fomi a, SSOOK from the parent, and
SSOOK from the City of Redwood City, we would be able to replace all of the playground
equipment in the District ~ith modem and safe facilities.

Project Plan

If the City supports this proposal, we would enlist the help of the parents at each site to select the
play structures that would be purchased and make sure that they are located in the appropriate
place on each campus. In addition. we expect that some parents may wish to raise additional
money and make the structures more elaborate than we could normally afford.

Since our schools serve as neighborhood parks throughout Redwood City, we believe that the.
City gets substantial use from the equipment at each of our sites. We would be very grateful if
the City could find the matching funds and enable us to fix our playgrounds.

Sincerely,

~.

-r-
