..,

REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

July 24, 2000

Subject
Purchase and Repair of Utility Pump Motors

Recommendation
Approve a resolution authorizing the purchase and/or repair of various sized water, storm
and sanitary sewer pump motors to Koffler Electrical Mechanical Apparatus Repair of San
Leandro, CA in the amount of $24,648.

Background
Redwood City currently has 122 water, sewer and storm pumps housed at 55 pump
stations throughout the City. Each pump is controlled and operated by an electric motor
with some motors operating continuously while others operate on an as-needed basis.
Although utility pump motors are fairly reliable and not as prone to failure as a pump, they
still require periodic repair and replacement. Each year the Public Works Services
Department develops a list of the most commonly purchased and/or repaired motors which
may be needed during the new Fiscal Year.

Staff required vendors to submit individual prices for the purchase of a new motor and also
prices for the repair of a motor. The below listed bids reflect the total amount of maximum
new purchases and maximum repairs in a single year. (Although the entire amount will not
be expended, I.E. $6,149 was expended in FY 1999/00). The City Clerk advertised the
bid invitation with copies of the bid being mailed to five vendors. The one bid received was
opened by the City Clerk on Wednesday, June 21,2000 and is considered a valid bid.

Koffler Electrical Mechanical Apparatus Repair San Leandro, CA

$24,648.00

E & M Electric

Healdsburg, CA
Stockton, CA

No Bid

Stanley Electric Motor Co.,lnc.

No Bid

Vincent Electric Motor Co.

San Jose, CA

No Bid

Palo Alto Electric Motor Corporation

Mountain View, CA No Bid

Staff contacted the four vendors who did not submit bids. All four vendors stated due to
personal shortages in their companies, increased workload and the fact that our bid award
was not a guaranteed expenditure amount, they were not interested. They thanked us for
the opportunity.

1 of 2

'-.' -. .~ T"
