t).4 - A 1-

Public Works Services has assisted by improving the condition of the street surface at the
intersection in preparation for the installation of the proposed crosswalk and stop legend
pavement markings.

Alternative
Do not install the stop sign on the eastbound approach of Harrison Avenue at Cleveland
Street. The intersection would remain in its present control configuration with a stop on the
northbound approach of Cleveland Street and no controls on Harrison Avenue. Crosswalk
markings would not be installed, since accident statistics suggest that marked crosswalks
at such uncontrolled locations tend to experience more accidents than those crosswalks
without crosswalk markings. At this particular location, vegetation on the southwest corner
limits visibility, especially between eastbound Harrison traffic and pedestrians approaching
on the sidewalk on the west side of Cleveland Avenue. Staff believes that marking
crosswalks at this corner without requiring eastbound Harrison traffic to stop would be
especially hazardous.

Fiscal Impact
Funds in the amount of $1,793.00 are available in the 2000-2001 Capital Improvement
Program budget in the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program.

Richard K.
