5 A (8)

~

The Plan supports the idea of expanded ferry service if demand is
warranted, and if it does not duplicate existing commute services
(particularly Caltrain).

Important Issues: The City Council Regional Transportation Committee
discussed issues regarding ferry service on August 17, 2000. It was
agreed that financing is not available to pursue ferry service at this time,
but Redwood City should not do anything that will foreclose the option.

Chapter 14. Transportation Systems Management
The Plan discusses TSM (Transportation Systems Management) and
TDM (Transportation Demand Management) as ways of increasing the
capacity of existing roadways without adding additional lanes.

Proposals include:
~ shuttle buses,
~ rapidly removing accidents,
~ freeway ramp metering,
~ signalization,
>- park and ride lots,
>- reversible lanes,
~ one-way streets,
~ traffic channelization,
>- intelligent transportation systems (electronic reader boards),
~ dedicated transportation coordinators,
~ ride-sharing,
~ preferential parking for ride-sharing,
>- adjusted work schedules,
~ work site design,
~ parking cash-out programs,
~ transit pass sales and subsidies, and
>- emergency ride home program.

Many of the above programs are being required as "conditions of
approval" for new projects. The recently adopted Countywide C/CAG
Traffic Mitigation Plan now requires such mitigation to be applied to new
projects, or local jurisdictions may lose gas tax money.

Important Issues: Shuttle busses have become one of the more valuable
forms of getting people from transit stations to work. The funding for this
service is subsidized 75% by governmental agencies. This funding is not
on-going, and has to be approved each year. If this funding disappears,
so will most or all of the shuttle bus service. Long term funding is needed.

-7-
