REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

December 4, 2000

Subject
Purchase of New Starters for Selected Storm Pump Stations

Recommendation
Adopt resolution authorizing the purchase of new Cutler Hammer Starters for selected storm
drain pump stations

Background
During Preventative (Electrical) Maintenance, the Public Works SeNices Department electrician
identified several Storm Station motor starters in need of replacement. These antiquated
starters are 30 to 40 years old and are at the end of their useful life. In their present condition,
the old starters present an eminent hazard to the operation of the pump stations and to. those
who seNice them because they can explode at any time. The electrician has been upgrading
other pumping stations with new improved Cutler Hammer Advantage Starters. The benefit of
these new Cutler Hammer Starters are that they are asbestos free and the improved
performance of the starters eliminates the hard bouncing during starting, which reduces much
wear and tear on the pump motors. These parts will replace worn parts at (a) Douglas Storm
Pump Station, (b) Maple Street Storm Pump Station, (c) Veterans Storm Pump Station, (d) Price
Tract Storm Pump Station and (e) Seaport Blvd. Storm Pump Station. Public Works SeNices
solicited three bids for the purchase of the starters:

(1 )
(2)
(3)

Consolidated Electrical Distributors (CEO), Redwood City, CA, $15,183.60;
GraybaR, Hayward, CA, $16,951.40;
Wesco, Santa Clara, CA, $16,436.79.

The lowest responsible bidder is CEO. We recommend the Cutler Hammer Advantage Starters
because of their quality, availability, and the need to standardize pump stations parts.

Alternative
There is no alternative to replacing these starters.

Fiscal Impact
Funds are contained in the CIP under Fund # 357-72533-94

!
77 v~ ,ft /j~

Marilyn W /Harang
Public Wo'rks Superintendent

Peter Ingram
Director, Public

orks SeNices

ØiJf-

Ed Everett
City Manager

Attachment: Resolution

, "T"---~.'..~._-'-_.._'
