<br />I,., ,~ <br /> <br />REPORT <br /> <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br /> <br />December 11, 2000 <br /> <br />Subject <br />The proposed use of 2000 Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) funds by the Redwood City <br />Police Department. <br /> <br />Recommendation <br />After completion of the public hearing, approve by motion, the Police Chiefs recommendation to <br />dedicate the funds to procure law enforcement related equipment, including technological equipment, <br />and to provide training for law enforcement personnel. <br /> <br />Background <br />The Omnibus Appropriations Act authorized the Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance to make <br />funds available to units of local government under the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) <br />program for the purposes of reducing crime and improving public safety. A public hearing must be held <br />prior to the awarding of the grant. This is the fifth consecutive year the City of Redwood City will <br />receive this grant. This year's award is $83,941. Funds must be used for one or more of the following <br />seven proposed areas: <br /> <br />y Law Enforcement Support: Hiring additional officers, paying overtime to law enforcement officers, <br />or procuring equipment related to law enforcement functions. <br /> <br />., Enhancing security measures in and around schools or other facilities or locations considered a <br />special risk for incidents of crime. <br /> <br />., Establishing or supporting drug courts. <br /> <br />" Enhancing the adjudication of cases involving violent offenders, including cases involving violent <br />juvenile offenders. <br /> <br />,. Establishing a multi-jurisdictional task force to work with Federal Law enforcement to prevent and <br />control crime. <br /> <br />)..- Establishing crime prevention programs to control, detect, or investigate crime or the prosecution of <br />criminals. <br /> <br />)..- Defray the cost of indemnification insurance for law enforcement officers. <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />.~.--.....
