<br />DES:djk n3/19/91 <br /> <br />(065/28) <br /> <br />0 RIG I N A L <br /> <br />MAR 2 5 1991 <br /> <br />RES 0 L UTI 0 N <br /> <br />N O. <br /> <br />11496 <br /> <br />---------- <br /> <br />RESOLUTION URGING SELECTION OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA <br />AS 1994 WORLD CUP SOCCER COMPETITION SITE <br /> <br />WHEREAS, upon application made by the United States soccer <br /> <br />Federation, <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />recognized national <br /> <br />governing body <br /> <br />for <br /> <br />soccer <br /> <br />within <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />United <br /> <br />States, <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />Federation <br /> <br />Int.ernationale <br /> <br />de <br /> <br />Football Association, <br /> <br />the world governing body for soccer, <br /> <br />has <br /> <br />designated the United States as the host country for the 1994 <br /> <br />World Cup Soccer Competition, the world's largest single sporting <br /> <br />event.; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the San Francisco Bay Area, officially represented <br /> <br />by World Cup San Francisco Bay Area 1994, <br /> <br />is bidding to become <br /> <br />one of the twelve communi ties that will host up t.o nine soccer <br /> <br />games to be played as part of this event; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />San <br /> <br />Francisco <br /> <br />Bay <br /> <br />Area, <br /> <br />with <br /> <br />two <br /> <br />excellent <br /> <br />stadia, Stanford University Stadium and Candlestick Park, offers <br /> <br />superb <br /> <br />facilities <br /> <br />for <br /> <br />teams <br /> <br />and <br /> <br />spectators, <br /> <br />maintains <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />physical infrastructure to support a major international event, <br /> <br />and <br /> <br />provides <br /> <br />governmental <br /> <br />agencies <br /> <br />that. <br /> <br />\ViII <br /> <br />cooperate <br /> <br />in <br /> <br />achieving a safe and successful event; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />San Francisco Bay Area <br /> <br />is <br /> <br />one <br /> <br />of <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />most <br /> <br />ethnically diversified areas in t.he United States, with strong <br /> <br />international ties to all parts of the world, is a major gateway <br /> <br />to the countries of the Pacific Rim and is a favorite destination <br /> <br />for international travelers to the United States; and <br /> <br />.,...--. <br />
