SECTION 1.5
STREET NETWORK
AND CIRCULATION
CONTEXT
The alignment of the existing street network impedes mobil-
ity in parts of the Corridor. For instance, it is difficult to cross
EI Camino Real and access downtown from the southern
neighborhoods, due to the lack of signalized intersections
that cross EI Camino Real between Jefferson and Oakwood.
Additionally, EI Camino Real cuts through the city's larger
grid pattern at a slight angle, creating broad swaths of pave-
ment that are not part of the roadway, short and redundant
street segments, and small triangular shaped islands along
the Corridor.
WHY IMPROVE THE STREET NETWORK
CONNECTING TO THE CORRIDOR?
Improvements to the street network and circulation system
would benefit all modes of transportation by promoting
efficiency, safety, and better connectivity within and through
Redwood City. In addition, areas where there are awkward
geometries of underutilized pavement can provide opportu-
nities for creating attractive public spaces along the Corridor
that would increase vitality, support businesses, and improve
the Corridor's aesthetics.
MAIN STREET AND REDWOOD ROAD:
FOUR-WAY INTERSECTION
C
Connecting Redwood Avenue through to Main Street would eliminate several awkward
intersection designs and create a new east -west connection across El Camino Real.
CHAPTER 11 MOBILITY
CQ
(D
(3l
00
