8.A. - Page 1 REPORT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the City Manager December 4, 2017 SUBJECT Consider applicants for appointment to fill one vacant seat on the Senior Affairs Commission RECOMMENDATION By roll call vote, make an appointment from the list of candidates for one vacant seat on the Senior Affairs Commission BACKGROUND Due to a recent resignation on the Senior Affairs Commission, the City Clerk's office conducted recruitment for the vacancy for a period of approximately five weeks between September 20, 2017 and October 27, 2017. Outreach included distribution of press releases, a video from the Mayor on the City website, as well as postings on social media outlets such as NextDoor, Facebook and Twitter. Additional outreach included a PowerPoint slide advertising the vacancy and recruitment period, which was displayed prior to each Council meeting in late September and early October and was broadcast on local government Channel 26 and Comcast Channel 27. Prior applicants who had expressed interest in serving on the Senior Affairs Commission were also contacted and notified of the open recruitment period. ANALYSIS Pursuant to City Charter Section 21 '/2, applicants to Boards and Commissions shall, at the time of their appointments and continuously during their incumbencies, be residents and electors of the City unless otherwise provided by the Council. The applicants for Council consideration for a vacant seat on the Senior Affairs Commission expiring on May 31, 2020 are as follows: • Brittany Lin • Ruth Louise Rogers Silverman After the applications were received by the City Clerk's office, staff conducted research and determined that both applicants are residents of Redwood City and are registered voters within San Mateo County.
