8.A. - Page 1 <br />REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br />December 4, 2017 <br />SUBJECT <br />Consider applicants for appointment to fill one vacant seat on the Senior Affairs <br />Commission <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />By roll call vote, make an appointment from the list of candidates for one vacant seat <br />on the Senior Affairs Commission <br />BACKGROUND <br />Due to a recent resignation on the Senior Affairs Commission, the City Clerk's office <br />conducted recruitment for the vacancy for a period of approximately five weeks between <br />September 20, 2017 and October 27, 2017. Outreach included distribution of press <br />releases, a video from the Mayor on the City website, as well as postings on social <br />media outlets such as NextDoor, Facebook and Twitter. Additional outreach included a <br />PowerPoint slide advertising the vacancy and recruitment period, which was displayed <br />prior to each Council meeting in late September and early October and was broadcast <br />on local government Channel 26 and Comcast Channel 27. Prior applicants who had <br />expressed interest in serving on the Senior Affairs Commission were also contacted and <br />notified of the open recruitment period. <br />ANALYSIS <br />Pursuant to City Charter Section 21 '/2, applicants to Boards and Commissions shall, at <br />the time of their appointments and continuously during their incumbencies, be residents <br />and electors of the City unless otherwise provided by the Council. <br />The applicants for Council consideration for a vacant seat on the Senior Affairs <br />Commission expiring on May 31, 2020 are as follows: <br />• Brittany Lin <br />• Ruth Louise Rogers Silverman <br />After the applications were received by the City Clerk's office, staff conducted research <br />and determined that both applicants are residents of Redwood City and are registered <br />voters within San Mateo County. <br />
