REDWOOD CITY EL CAMINO REAL CORRIDOR PLAN
56
SectION 4.2
PUBLIc ARt
CONTEXT
Public art creates memorable places, injecting liveliness,
character, and vitality into communities. In Redwood City,
public art is funded, in part, by the Art in Public Places fund.
In addition, new commercial development projects over
50,000 square feet must provide publicly visible art on-site
that is equal in value to at least 1% of the project’s con-
struction valuation or pay an in-lieu fee.
WHY PROMOTE PUBLIC ART ALONG
THE CORRIDOR?
Installing public art along El Camino Real would help create
special places and establish the Corridor’s identity. Public art
pieces could foster conversation among community mem-
bers and promote walking and bicycling. Additionally, it
shows the City’s commitment to and investment in an area,
which encourages merchants, property owners, and private
developers to do the same.
Public art, especially that which is interactive, makes a place memorable and engaging.Source: lplegalfreebies.comSource: CNNSource: Dyett & BhatiaSource: Dyett & BhatiaSource: Dyett & Bhatia
