REDWOOD CITY EL CAMINO REAL CORRIDOR PLAN <br />B-4 <br />GRAND BOULEVARD INITIATIVE <br />(ONGOING) <br />The Grand Boulevard Initiative (GBI) is a voluntary <br />collaboration between nineteen cities, San Mateo and Santa <br />Clara counties, and associated agencies and groups with <br />an interest in the 43-mile El Camino Real Corridor. Its goal <br />is to improve the performance, safety, and aesthetics of the <br />Corridor between San Francisco and San Jose, and to create <br />a “grand boulevard of meaningful destinations shaped by all <br />the cities along its length.” <br />More specifically, the GBI seeks to coordinate the <br />transformation of El Camino Real, an urban highway that <br />is paralleled by regional rail systems, into a smart growth <br />corridor. Elements include expanding the range of housing <br />choices, spurring economic development, and supporting <br />existing investments in transportation, urban infrastructure, <br />and services. <br />Ten Guiding Principles define the GBI vision for El Camino <br />Real. They are as follows: <br />• Target housing and job growth in strategic areas along <br />the Corridor; <br />• Encourage compact mixed-use development and high- <br />quality urban design and construction; <br />• Create a pedestrian-oriented environment and improve <br />streetscapes, ensuring full access to and between public <br />areas and private developments; <br />• Develop a balanced multimodal corridor to maintain <br />and improve mobility of people and vehicles along the <br />Corridor; <br />• Manage parking assets; <br />• Provide vibrant public spaces and gathering places; <br />• Preserve and accentuate unique and desirable community <br />character and the existing quality of life in adjacent <br />neighborhoods; <br />• Improve safety and public health; <br />• Strengthen pedestrian and bicycle connections with the <br />Corridor; and <br />• Pursue environmentally sustainable and economically <br />viable development patterns.
