<br />(2) <br /> <br />15 ¡ <br /> <br /> <br />MASSACHUSETTES - HAMPTON - MADDUX STREETS PARK. Chairman Stout <br />reported on his conference with Superintendent of Schools Andrew <br />Spinas, going to the engineering firm of Frost & Briant to <br />obtain preliminary copies of the projected school site and <br />reviewed the ensuing meeting of the City Council of August 3. <br />At this meeting -Councilman Herkner opened the subject by <br />presenting the report of the Real Estate Committee said- report <br />recommending. acquisi tion of a 2/3rds acre 'pa,rcel now.under <br />option. At this same meeting petitions bea.ring approximately <br />1,900 names requesting the City acquire at least an additional <br />five acres were presented. Highlands Improvement, Redwood <br />Terrace, and Westwood Terrace Improvement clubR were the <br />organizations presenting the request. A spokesman of each <br />group s~oke from the floor. <br /> <br />Following the request of the improvement clubs Chairman <br />Stout reviewed the Commissions reasons for the initial request <br />for the neighborhood parl{. He then called 1.1pOn Commis sioner <br />Hector who reviewed the Park and Recreation capital expenditures <br />program for the past few years. Mr. Hector pointed out that <br />this program of new land acquisition and expansion of facilities <br />"has been very minor in this period com:pared to the average <br />California city of this population. He expressed the opinion <br />that a subs;~antial expendi ture for land ~t this time would be <br />quite logical. <br /> <br />ChairmB.n Stout further expressed the CR.se for the park <br />citing that delinquency can be anticipated ~in the future if <br />this area should not be provided ample area for supervised, <br />healthful recreation. He further noted that school play- <br />grounds are not an adequate answer, noting cases where <br />ch:i.ldren not in attendance are made to leave the school grounds. <br /> <br />Follo\ving the discussion at the Council, Collllcilman made <br />the motion that the Real Estate Committee work with the City <br />Manager and City Attorney and attempt to obtai~ an option on <br />five acres or more of land in addition to the school site. <br /> <br />.NE~Y CITY fvTAP. Commissioner Gold stated that copies of the new map <br />wlll be available at the next meeting. <br /> <br />"STARS OF TOMOHROy¡ft. ,The sixth first place marching cup Dorthy <br />Roberts and her "Stars of Tom.orro\v" marching troup have presented <br />the City's Recreation. Department was reported by Chairman Stout. <br />This trophy was won at Salinas, California. <br /> <br /> <br />SECRETAI~Y TO TAIĆ MINUTES. ~Æotion, seconded, and pB~ssed b:r Commissioners <br />Brennan and Heçtor that a letter be sent the Council requesting the <br />assistance of a secretary who is a non-member of the Commission who <br />would re cord the minute;.' of meetings. <br /> <br />HIGHLANDS COMMUNITY CLUB STREET CARNIVAL. Commissioner Gold read an <br />invitation by the IIighlands Communi ty Club to the Commission members <br />~ to attend their street carnival being held in their qrea at 6:00 P.
